Thread: "Indie Veterans" Who Have Never Played Coachella

  1. #1

Default "Indie Veterans" Who Have Never Played Coachella

Coachella is all over the reunions and the hot bands of the moment, but I feel like sometimes some older bands, many of whom were innovators of the music Coachella is all about, get overlooked for the hot youngsters. Some of these have obviously been discussed in other threads, but I'd like to see any of the following there this year, they all either never broke up or got back together in the last few years with little fanfare:

    Lou Reed
    Mission of Burma
    Wire
    The Wedding Present
    Dinosaur Jr.
    Built to Spill
    Devo
    Elvis Costello
    Bryan Ferry
    The B-52s
    Paul Weller
    They Might Be Giants
    Echo and the Bunnymen

    Anyone with me?

    Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, YES.

Wire, Mission of Burma, B-52s, Dinosaur Jr., Devo, sure. I'll see that.

Bryan Ferry ONLY if it's fucking Roxy Music. No substitutes.

    The rest, whatever, I'm ambivalent.
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

Yeah, the ones I'd really like to see are Wire and Mission of Burma, both of whom were touring this fall, but I was forced to miss both shows due to prior commitments those nights. I'd also love to see Lou Reed and Devo, though not sure when either last toured, I think fairly recently in both cases.

Oh, good call on YLT, I actually think this could be the year for them finally, with a supposed new album out early next year. I think Daniel Johnston might freak out a little at Coachella, and I'm not sure it's a fit for him. I saw him a little while back and I could barely hear him in a little club in DC, I think he'd get drowned out by whatever neighboring act was playing at the same time as him. He and Magnetic Fields just aren't made for festivals, I don't think.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is long overdue. As is Yo La Tengo who, according to Ira, have never even been asked to play Coachella!

I actually think an XTC reunion would be harder than the Smiths, what with the disabling affliction and all.

I'll second Yo La Tengo, who sprung to mind as I saw the thread title, and also Dino Jr., one of my favorite bands I've never seen live.

Pulp...should have played in 99, 01, or 02 back when they were together, but they didn't, so that makes a reunion Coachella set even more essential.
    4/8 Summer Camp @ Echo, 4/11-13 Coachella, 4/17 SISU, Dum Dum Girls @ Roxy, 4/27 Ghost B.C. @ Fonda, 4/30 Mono @ Troubadour, 5/3 I Break Horses @ Bootleg Theater, 5/28-6/1 Primavera Sound, 6/4 Nisennenmondai @ Jazzhouse, 6/18-22 Sled Island
