Yeah, kind of a weird one on that list... Nick Cave and Malkmus are decent ones as well...

Once again, Bon Iver is on a list... for shame.

i wonder if all this Girl Talk and Of Montreal shit is a kneejerk reaction...

Hissing Fauna and Night Ripper were really good albums...
maybe these critics missed the boat with those and to ease their guilty conscious they are propping up the followup albums, which are highly inferior.

If you have Skeletal Lamping or Feed The Animals in your top 20 all i'm hearing is "i haven't listened to very many new albums"

I agree (except I didn't really think Night Ripper was that good of an album, it's fun, but not a top 20)...

Blenders list is kind of a joke...Fall Out Boy in the top ten is pretty rough, but Girl Talk at #2 is joke, its a fun album and all but even in a weak year for music it doesnt even come close to the second best record of the year.

the first few lists that trickle out always suck... Spin will probably be next...

By mid-december we should see a few really good lists, hopefully some that will reveal some albums we haven't heard of.

It would be nice to do an analysis of these publications to determine how many of these individuals in their year-end lists graced the cover of their magazine over the course of the year. I would think that has something to do with their appearance on some of these lists.

Mojo's list is interesting. I'm not sure I agree, but they have some good albums on there. Much better than the first two.

i find that the inclusion of Abe Vigoda and Fucked up and the likes yet the exclusion of No Age is interesting

Let me defend of Montreal, because the first time I listened through it, I hated it, because I really wanted them to be on a roll the way their last albums have been.

I think "An Eluardian Instance" is a pretty damn good song, and I think it's cool how "Touched Something's Hollow" leads into it. "Wicked Wisdom" grew on me a lot. I also think that "Id Engager" is beautiful. Those are the "gems" I was talking about on page uno.

There are also parts of songs that I think are very good:
    0:01 - 1:10 of Nonpareil of Favor
    1:01 - 1:38 of Triphallus, To Punctuate!
    and
    0:01 - 2:36 of Plastis Wafers

So that's nothing compared to Hissing Fauna, but I still think those "gems" are pretty awesome.

I don't hate the album by any means. It was a disappointment, but I appreciate that they were trying something different. I didn't like it, I thought they didn't really accomplish what they set out to do, but whatever, not every album can be great.

    Well, poop.

Deerhoof's new album was grand, and so was Damon Albarn's "Monkey" thing.

Also, Mojo has Amadou and Mariam on theirs. Major props. It's just about the best release of this year.

Lil Wayne sticks out like a sore thumb on Paste's list. Sandwiched in between Liam Finn, I'm From Barcelona, and Lee Ann Womack.

Didn't Metallica have some god aweful compression? Every time I opened a music magazine there was a write up about how shitty that thing sounded.

Indeed... there were also all sorts of visual comparisons on YouTube between the CD mix and the earlier version they released through Guitar Hero (which didn't have the same problems) proving that it wasn't bullshit.

I bet Blender's list will be the worst of the year. So far it's winning.
    4/8 Summer Camp @ Echo, 4/11-13 Coachella, 4/17 SISU, Dum Dum Girls @ Roxy, 4/27 Ghost B.C. @ Fonda, 4/30 Mono @ Troubadour, 5/3 I Break Horses @ Bootleg Theater, 5/28-6/1 Primavera Sound, 6/4 Nisennenmondai @ Jazzhouse, 6/18-22 Sled Island

List discredited at the jump for "Taylor Swift" but I've fished out the appropriate mentions.

Again, slimmed down. I won't call this list discredited (though I should just for Oasis) but I don't know the magazine or some of the bands.
