The Basque I grew up on is served family style.
Amazing soup & french bread, followed by basque beans & salsa, salad, vegetables, pickled tongue (yes..and it is wonderful) spaghetti & french fries. You can order "just" this set up. Or get an entree too.
Which can be fried chicken, tri-tip, steak, lamb, halibut, etc.
The seasoning/flavor of all the dishes is unique & to die for!
Think of Buca di Bepo style, but way better food.
The Wool Growers in Bakersfield is unbelievable. Both in the quality of food & in the huge volume they have been pushing through there for 50+ years
(I sure miss it over here in the PHX).

Iluna Basque in SF takes the traditional fare that people drive to Bakersfield for to a sophisticated, modern level.

    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

Not related to the Bakersfield Woolgrowers, but I have heard it is very good.
The wine-soda thing is funny--the Basque love their wine!

trivial sidenote...It is John Madden's favorite restaurant. He does not fly.
He travels the US to Sunday Night Football in his huge luxury motor coach.
The first stop from his Oakland home is the Los Banos Woolgrowers.

I've been to a few of those. 111 Minna can get crowded but usually only for big events, not often for monthly shows. It's usually a pre-party spot, especially on weekends. Looks like the music in Room 2 will be pretty good (after checking out the art in room 1)

Yeah, I'd imagine it as being somewhat of a smaller space as well, I would have to get there early. I was hoping that the number of Jan. events would help spread out the crowd a bit. Regardless, we'll be checking it out. My gf is an artist and is especially stoked.

Attention SF Bay Area beer drinkers!!!!

    SF Beer Week is coming!
    Feb. 6th-15th

America's craft beer movement began in the San Francisco Bay Area. With Anchor Brewing's rescue by Fritz Maytag in 1965 and the founding of New Albion Brewing in 1976, craft beer grew into the Silver Age of American brewing, with over 1400 small craft breweries today. Northern California alone has more than most states and enjoys an unrivaled reputation for the quality and diversity of its craft beer.

SF BEER WEEK will be a ten-day celebration of that legacy, showcasing the Bay Area's brewing heritage with as many as 150 events. The week will be anchored by the Bistro Double IPA Festival, the Toronado Barleywine Festival and will end with a bang at the Celebrator's Bay Area Beer Celebration. In between there will be beer dinners, cheese and beer pairing events, other gourmet food events savoring our world-class cuisine, meet the brewer evenings, homebrewing demonstrations, music, films, and even a museum exhibition exploring the history of Bay Area brewing, from Monterey to Sacramento and beyond.

I've been to this before and highly recommend it if you like hoppy, double pale ales:
    (at the Bistro in Hayward)
    9th annual Double IPA Festival
    Saturday, February 7th; 11am
    $25
The city has allowed us to close all of Main street for this event. There will be over 50 beers on tap, professional judging with awards ceremony, and live music and BBQ all day. The official public kickoff for SF BEER WEEK.

    This looks really cool:
    (also at the Bistro)
    Beer Mixology & Sensory Appreciation
    Thursday, February 12; 6:30 p.m.
    $40
Hosted by Judy Ashworth (Americas Premier Lady Publican) & Terence Sullivan of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
Limited tickets available for an evening of beer nirvana. A short course on sensory (by America's sensory specialists- Sierra Nevada) to learn to discern complex flavors within beer, followed by mixing beers to achieve flavor profiles hard to find in 1 beer alone. Appetizers will also be included to enhance this special tasting.

Stay out of downtown Oakland tonight. Yeeesh.

Police and SWAT teams are swarming the streets of Oakland, hoping to quell crowds angry over the death of Oscar Grant III. Grant was fatally shot New Yearís Day by a BART police officer at the Fruitvale station. Near City Hall at 12th and Broadway, KRON 4ís Kate Thompson says police cars and officers are set up at almost every intersection, redirecting traffic and pushing protestors away from the area. Kate says officers are being taunted and screamed at, while the sound of bottles shattering fills the air. Many businesses in the area have brought down metal gates to protect their storefronts.

Yeah I saw signs for a protest about that in the city too. Said the BART police "shot him in the back while he begged for his life." I don't know what happened but it's pretty sad that somebody's dad is dead.

So is this just between the 21st Amendment and Magnolia breweries? Did you get the t-shirt and glass last year? Between SF Beer Week and Strong Beer Month, my liver is gonna take a beating.
