Tom, some people like to relax by working in the garden or call themselves a do-it-yourself type and like fixing projects around the house. We all know you like to cook. Asking my previous unanswered question a different way, what type of productive things do you enjoy? Which ones are you like "no way" and find it best you have someone else take care of?

I'm like Homer Simpson when it comes to home handyman work. I suck at it in a big, huge, awful way. Since I live in Arizona, 'gardening' is a little different here, but I pretty much suck at it too. Car care, home repair, lawn care, all that typical American man stuff, it doesn't interest me, so I suck at it. Or I suck at it, so it doesn't interest me. So yeah, I pay to have others do it for me.

Your kids should always feel safe at home. I don't mean buy guns in case of burglers. I mean, they should feel in their hearts that home is a safe place for them emotionally. When you get mad at them (and you have, and you will, of course) resolve it. Don't let it fester. Resolve it in a way that they feel heard. That they feel understood, that you've listened to them and get their view, even if you disagree with it. (that's not the same as caving to everything -- quite different). They should know that if they fuck up, there will be consequences, but those consequences do not include losing their parents' love.

Also, lead by example. Live your life in a way that you would want them to emulate. If you want them to make good judgments, make good judgments yourself that they can see.

Irony: last night a few hours after I'd posted this (and after I'd already gone to bed) I got a call from my daughter. She had a flat tire. I had to go change it. Fortunately, that is a thing I can actually do myself.

What was the hardest thing about parenting for you? (Or still is?)

It has been said (though I have no idea why) that I may be a little impatient when helping them with their homework, and in particular math homework. so there's one: patience.

I hate school recitals and that stuff. Choir, band, etc etc. I go (& still do - younger daugher plays trombone in the HS band) but if it's one of those poorly organized, late starting, pointlessly dragging on forever things, I might get a little cranky.

Yeah. Bribes seem to work better. Threats just make them damn grumpy.

"Antithesis". You're asking me to provide a list of things I don't want to do before I die? I don't see how that question even makes sense. The list of things I don't want to do is infinite. I don't want to break my leg. I don't want to break my arm. I don't want to catch a cold. I don't want to go to a Coldplay concert. I don't want to be kicked in the genitals. I don't want to read a bad book or watch a bad movie. See? I'm wondering if you even know what 'antithesis' means.
