Rick, if you could choose to switch lives with one person who you know in real life, who would it be and why?

Rick, when a film is broken into chapters for a dvd release, what percentage of films base it on the number of scenes in a movie, and what percentage base it on the particular length of a scene? Please give your answer in the form of a pie chart.

    Coffee or tea?
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

And it's always a little funny when you complain about people oversharing considering you've informed us of incestuous thoughts you've had for your brother, desires to turn your daughters into lesbians, and your feelings towards blowjobs and the specific things you don't like about giving them. And those are just the things I can recall off the top of my head. I don't mind that you've discussed all those things, just find it odd that you would find other people's similar honesty so off-color.

I honestly can't come up with a list of even 1. I have really good taste and if a film is so bad as to be considered terrible by "most," then it's probably not even something I bothered watching. Of films I've caught in the theater, I know The Fountain was divisive but I don't know if people label it terrible, and I don't even really love it so much as like it a fair amount. Even if I were to go back to the films I loved when I was a kid, like Big Trouble in Little China or Karate Kid or My Girl, I doubt that they're considered Battlefield Earth-level bad.

I'd probably have an easier time coming up with a list of films that people love but that I think are terrible, although the only one I can think up at the moment is Pootie Tang and that's only because it was mentioned in that Louis CK thread, otherwise I wouldn't be aware that anybody loves that piece of shit.

There isn't one. If a movie is so bad that I think it's "really crappy" for the first half, it's either completely lost me and there's no hope for turning my opinion around, or I just stop watching it. Got other shit to do.

No, but I can tell you that the Steve Zahn/Milla Jovovich/Timothy Olyphant vehicle A Perfect Getaway started off horribly, got 10% better after 15 minutes, dipped back down in quality by 30% at the first act break, was mired simply in mediocrity for the next hour, before experiencing a remarkable uptick of 58.4% in watchability for 12 of the final 15 minutes.

Of people I know in real life, nobody, to be honest. Well, do you mean to assume their interests and ambitions as well? If so, then no, there isn't anybody. There's one coworker who used to play minor league baseball and is in ridiculously good shape who I wouldn't mind trading bodies with, but I know he doesn't earn what I do and I wouldn't want to take the pay cut. There's nobody I know who's really successful in writing or filmmaking whose career I would trade positions with. The one person who has had a modicum of success with directing and is able to make that his full time job is a generally shitty person otherwise (that's the guy I mentioned before who bilked me out of $1,000), is divorced, has a couple of kids, is really scrawny, smokes like a chimney, and used to be some sort of addict (crack or heroin or some shit, I don't remember). So the problems in his life wouldn't be worth the career trade-off. And the people I know who are able to afford going to shows at a clip I would envy are either older than I'd want to be, have jobs I wouldn't want, live somewhere I wouldn't want to stay, or aren't ambitious about the things I am. So yeah, I don't really envy the life of anybody I personally know.

Someone I don't know: James Franco. Motherfucker's doing so much with his life that I wish I had the discipline and drive to accomplish.

43.6 to 48.7. The remaining 7.7% have their chapter breaks occur at intervals preset by the DVD-creating program because the person responsible for the task doesn't know what he/she is doing and by the time the mistake is realized, they've made too many discs to just throw them out and start all over again and they figure most people aren't going to pay attention or give a shit, so they send them out as is.

SD, is there something that you have posted here that your wife didn't already know about yourself? If so what was it? If not then what is one thing you have never told her before? (I don't mean some deep dark secret like the man you killed as a teenager but more just some random fact about yourself)

I don't want to know about a lot of the things you post, either. It does seem kind of strange that you would call them out for oversharing.

    Rick,

What sort of things that people sometimes post about do you not want to know about? Leave amy out of this, I'm talking generally. How much information is too much information about random people on the internet? Or even not-so-random people? Are the things you don't want to know about entirely sexual, or are there other bodily functions/neuroses/hangups and quirks that are off limits, in your mind? Does, for example, "are you a wadder or a folder" come into play here?

Also, unrelated, please describe the most excrutiating shit you have ever taken. What caused it? Was it what you ate or the condition of your anus or something else? Describe.

    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

Which region of cinema are you preferential to and why?

Is there a director who you admire that you normally wouldn't consider from that country (stylistically speaking)? For example, mine is Korea--Bong Joon-ho

What is your favorite genre? Guilty pleasure genre?

Do you have a favorite Cinematographer or preferred collaboration, if so, who?

No, I'm fairly honest & forthcoming about who/how I am. One thing that I've never told her before is that I occasionally watch porn of women with shaved heads. (The interest predated Natalie Portman shaving her head in V for Vendetta.)

I don't really mind what people share about themselves online. The posts that bother me are ones that are boringly written or poorly typed. Grammatical errors drive me up the wall: "me and her went to the movies." Shit like that. The "too much information" aspect would come into play in a situation like if there were a group of people on the board who hung out in real life and one of them revealed that they like watching, say, rape fantasy porn videos featuring girls who resemble girls in that group they hang out with. And I guess what would make that TMI would be the resemblance of the girls in the videos to girls in the group, not necessarily the rape fantasy porn video watching. Because let's be honest with ourselves, who hasn't watched that?

I guess another thing I wouldn't want to know about (and that would answer your question about it being strictly sexual in nature) would be if someone bathes in urine (be it theirs or someone else's) or eats feces or something else involving unnatural consumption of disgusting bodily fluids. But there are other things people have shared on this board -- predilections for receiving cumshots or anal sex -- that don't bother me. If they were to present pictures of themselves in those situations, that'd be unwelcome, but just talking about it isn't a big deal.

It was December 2000, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had just been released in Tucson, and I had some sort of stomach ailment that compelled me to leave the theater and take what felt like a birth-giving shit. It felt jagged, like ninja stars were embedded in my ass. I didn't have a very good diet at the time so it was probably caused by a bad bean burrito or something.

    Folder. No. 13.

I don't think it's appropriate in pools. Animals urinate and defecate in the ocean so I don't see a problem with a person urinating in there as well (although if you're in an area with a lot of people present, you really ought to get some distance from them). Peeing in the shower almost can't be helped. You're an asshole if you don't aim for the drain, though, and if the drain's clogged, you should hold it till you can get to the toilet.

Yeah. Had a crush on a cousin when I was, like, 12 or 13. She's really dark skinned and lives in Vegas and our fathers are only half-brothers, so it was easier to disconnect the idea of her being family.

    - Large trucks driving in the left lane instead of the right (even if they're going 5 miles over the speed limit)
    - Cars driving what I deem too slowly at the moment (they could be going 10 miles over the speed limit but if I want to drive 15 over, they draw my ire)
    - Cars staying in the right lane on the freeway and being dicks about allowing you to merge even though there's space for them to move over to the next lane
    - Stupid billboards I have to see everyday (there's one for a gym that drove me up the wall for months because it read "Dear Nose, I haven't seen you in a while, Sincerely, Toes" -- should've been "We haven't seen you in a while" if it's signed by Toes)
    - Political bumper stickers I disagree with ("One Big Ass Mistake America")
    - Hummers and other unnecessarily large gas guzzling vehicles
    - Door-to-door salespeople who are too dim to just accept my polite "no" and try to be persistent, forcing me to be an asshole
    - Obnoxiously foul body odor
    - People who have bad breath and stand too close when talking to you
    - People who walk slowly in airports
    - Jennifer watching Jersey Shore
    - Dishes that are ostensibly clean that I find crusted food particles on
    - The person who takes the last cold water not putting any others in the fridge
    - Going into a stall at work to find the toilet wasn't flushed
    - Going to print something for the first time since I got new ink and seeing that the cartridge is already practically empty
    - Bridezillas & bitches who fucking repeat the same stupid phrase
    - My iPhone going slowly, especially when this causes me to lose a game

I don't know how "weird" these are and I'm probably forgetting a few, but that's a representative list.

Outside of America, France. When I worked at a video store several years ago, we had a section devoted to La Nouvelle Vague and I got a lot of inspiration from many of those films. I wanted to make a film that could stand alongside them.

Not really. The thing is, I don't watch anywhere near as many movies nowadays due to simply not watching much TV period, and when we do watch one, Jen's not a subtitle fan so I'm limited to watching foreign films when she's out of town (which is infrequently) or late at night/early in the morning when she's asleep, and typically I'm not in the mood for watching anything that requires too much attention at those times.

I guess edgy dramas. Would that be a fair designation of films like Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, and Boogie Nights? Just calling them dramas wouldn't paint the best picture, and action/adventure (which is where at least Pulp and Fight Club would end up at a video store) isn't very accurate as far as I'm concerned.

Guilty pleasure genre would be low-rent horror films, the type of stuff they air on Syfy. Lost a significant portion of my St. Patrick's Day this year needlessly watching the Leprechaun marathon they had (and was disappointed they didn't air Leprechaun 4: In Space, Leprechaun in the Hood, or Back 2 tha Hood). My interest was born out of watching Killer Klowns from Outer Space when I was a kid, and I think it's been maintained because I don't feel the need to watch the entire movie. It's probably also out of some subconscious feeling of superiority to the person making it and to make myself feel better about not working in the industry myself. "Yeah, I'm not in Hollywood but at least I'm not making shit like this," that kind of thing.

Emmanuel Lubezki. Was first struck by his work on Sleepy Hollow and was impressed with what he accomplished on Children of Men.

Amen brother. Or people who just stop in the middle of a lane of foot traffic to try to figure out where they are. Gomer this isn't the bus station. Would you stop your car in the middle of the freeway to take out a map?

    Rick,

You and everyone else on the planet have one free kill in your entire lifetime. Once and only once in your whole life you can simply point your finger at someone, say the magic word, and *blink* they're gone. No recriminations, no prosectution. However, everyone else on the planet has this same power. Describe the scenario, past or present, where you are/would have been most likely to exercise your one-off.

edit: you, and everyone else, don't get this power until you turn 25.
