    Default The Architecture Thread

Was reading this article in the NY Times about Zaha Hadid's stunning new Guangzhou Opera House in China. It's certainly operatic, which is appropriate. The exterior is supposed to suggest pebbles in a stream. I love the contrast of the warm coppers and golds in the auditorium with the harder, colder look of the lobbies and exterior. Show us some of your favorite buildings; new or historic. And, if you would, please tell us the names of the buildings and the architects. Let us know what you like about the buildings if you care to.

Here's the aforementioned Guangzhou Opera House designed by Zaha Hadid.

Well, the auditorium itself is certainly impressive.

Ironically that Eyesore of the month site is a fucking shitpile of horrible web design and kind of an eye sore. If you want to check out former "Eyesore of the month" winners it will pop them up in new tabs each time, and the color scheme and layout is horrible.

Taschen publishes a great series of coffee table books that has featured the complete works of both Zaha Hadid and Santiago Calatrava. The books are excellent (I own the Tadao Ando edition) and I highly recommend investing in one. I think that it is important to note that Hadid is a female architect and Calatrava is not only an architect but also a structural engineer. Both are a genius.

A friend of mine has one of the best websites for architectural related info: archinect.com

And if you live in california, do yourself a favor and visit Louis Kahn's salk institute in La Jolla. It's spectacular!

I also love the works from Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, José Rafael Moneo, Santiago Calatrava, Antoni Gaudí, Peter Zumthor, Steven Holl, Luis Barragán, Shigeru Ban and Buckminster Fuller.

    Great thread!

Yeah, as for the Gehry building in Vegas? I'm a bit perplexed as well. Disney Hall in LA and the Guggenheim in Bilbao are stunners, but when you're designing a "Center for Brain Health", having the building look like its melting in on itself like some Dali nightmare seems a bit insensitive. A little too on the nose.

Ohhh, the Salk is pretty gorgeous. The view doesn't hurt, of course. I used to work at Scripps and regularly took detours.

I'm also a huge fan of Richard Meier - his firm did the Getty, of course, but his other projects (the Shenzhen clubhouse, Barcelona MOCA, Ara Pacis, etc.) show that same strength of line and the same sleek boldness. You don't have to make crazy shapes or defy heights to make a beautiful space.

As I was finishing high school, I took a couple architecture classes and designed a restaurant for the culinary arts students (the restaurant was going to be built on the school grounds). I was also accepted to the architecture program at Texas Tech University. But in the process of this, I was quite certain that I was absolute shit at architecture, and that I would always be absolute shit at architecture, so I dropped it without a second thought.

    Those were some fine times.

EDIT: They didn't build that restaurant that I designed. They had no money. They just cleared out some space in the cafeteria and stuck it in there.

We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

Have any of you guys been to the Casa da Musica in Porto? I'm trying to swing through there next summer and would like to catch something there. Anyone by chance know about performance seasons or anything? (I assume no but worth a shot)

LAist has a look at Emerson College's new Hollywood campus building. I think the exterior is gorgeous, but some of the interior--especially the dorm rooms--looks like a futuristic prison.
