Default Thee Temple ov Genesis P-Orridge

In conjunction with my previous Ian Svenonius thread and the Implant thread, I bring you a thread dedicated to one of the most fascinating, challenging, and intelligent people in music over the past 50 years, Genesis P-Orridge, founder of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, and arguably the progenitor of industrial and acid house. Here's an extremely interesting interview in four parts of Genesis on Svenonius' show, Soft Focus.

I was once for real after a show during the "Towards Thee Infinite Beat" tour but it was on their tour bus(an old church bus) heading down to Tijuana for a gig after a show in Riverside Ca. and it was a fucking trip for the next 48hrs.

Did anyone else here go to this?

I still think this was one of the greatest nights of my life.

Couple months later there had a rave at what is now the Morongo Casino, called "MindNummer". It was a Temple Ov Psychick Youth involved event.
It was also the second time I ever tried acid (the first time was at the above event), and I was talked into taking much more than I was prepared for. My mind was racing so hard that my thoughts were starting to edit themselves.

Anyways I wandered into one of the side rooms, which was filled with people sitting down, and a guy was reading something from a piece of paper, while holding on to a flashlight. I remember looking at the paper and it was just a bunch of scrambled words jumbled in all directions all over the paper, as if someone had cut words out of a newspaper and just dropped them on it. I started getting the feeling that something was Very Very Wrong with all of this and had to get out of there. Things weren't much easier in the next room which had all sorts of scary T.O.P.Y artwork and video screens, one of which was showing 8 Transmissions 8. It flashed on an image of a young person sitting in a bathtub full of blood, laughing. That was enough for me.
I did stay til the end of the party though, having spent much of the time trying to calm down outside.

    Interesting times...

I had a very mild pleasant trip at the Psychic TV show at the Fonda on their last tour. I was so excited just to be in the same room as Genesis. It was a really nice show.

Also, I vaguely know a guy who spent a day at Disneyland with Genesis P-Orridge, which would probably be my Make A Wish request if I ever got a chance to make one.

    Yes.

I have posted along with a few others on another industrial music thread that genesis in any of his iterations would be a treat.

I would like to expand the Coachella palate and even add some noise and avante garde artists ala John Zorn, Merzbow etc.

So, I've never heard Psychic TV. Get thee to recommending tracks/albums to start with. Be advised that I like Throbbing Gristle, and that watching live video of them is amazing.

Psychic TV are highly prolific (they hold or held the record for most albums released in a year by a single band) and highly uneven, so navigating their discography is rough sailing. Their first two albums, Force Thee Hand Ov Chance and Dreams Less Sweet, are probably pretty good starting points. They're all over the place, from noise experiments to surprisingly straightforward and sincere pop songs. According to Wikipedia:
"Force the Hand of Chance, Dreams Less Sweet, Allegory and Self, and Trip/Reset are considered by P-Orridge, in an interview with Sonic Envelope, to be the fully-realized PTV albums -- "metaphorical and very, very considered and carefully constructed meticulous albums.""

Towards Thee Infinite Beat is more of their acid house style than those other albums. Their latest album Hell Is Invisible . . . Heaven Is Here is actually pretty good too, mostly just psychedelic rock. I like and listen to Throbbing Gristle more, but there's a lot of good stuff scattered throughout the Psychic TV catalog, and Genesis is always interesting if nothing else.

This is terrifying, and a perfect example of why I would have never taken LSD anywhere that wasn't flowery and happy. I could never risk being that scared.

yeah, that was the closest I ever came to a full blown bad trip (on acid), but I was pretty young and impressionable at the time. The whole situation seemed so subversive, I thought I had been possibly tricked into some sort of devil worship situation. What made matters worse is I had brought along my best friend who had never raved or taken acid before, and he was scared too, and I felt responsible for him.

The visuals in the main room were giant projections including the PTV video I posted above... trust me it looked scary on a giant wall without hearing the actual music that went with it. I thought Genesis was using mind control on me by saying "No, don't go that way. Go this way." I also remember nuclear explosion footage and more hyperdelic TOPY video of naked people hanging upside down. The music had taken a sinister turn, it was kind of like 'falling down an elevator shaft' techno.

It wasn't all bad though. After a few hours of hanging out in the outside area, me and my friends turned a corner and suddenly just could not stop laughing at each other and everything. We were overcome with such a feeling of pure joy that it was almost difficult to imagine our mindset just a few hours earlier.

I don't feel any fear or threat from Genesis P Orridge anymore at all, and the notion of it seems silly now (given his he/she appearance lately), but I thought about that night for years, and every time I drive past the Morongo casino on the 10 freeway on the way to Coachella or Palm Springs I still get a little chill.

GPO can have pretty weird effects on people... and as I have heard from the TOPY camp, "a bad trip is a good trip", presumably I guess because you learn more about yourself.
Talking about it here made me remember a lot of parts of it that I had forgotten. Hard to imagine that this was 16 years ago! I feel old now.

some of my favorite Psychic TV records are

    Dreams Less Sweet
    Force The Hand Of Chance
    Allegory And Self
Hex Sex the singles pt. 1 (gots a great version of 'Good Vibrations')
    Trip Reset (fucking amazing)
Hell Is Invisible, Heaven Is Her/e

Also Gen put out a solo record thats called "When I Was Young" very dreamy with his signature word play annunciation. It is a record I couldn't stop listening to for 9 months...

Oct 20th we get a new PTV record "Mr. Alien Brain Vs. The Skinwalkers"

I also read once that Genesis worked for a art firm in the 70's and had something to do with the cover of The Dark Side Of The Moon. I'm not sure if it's true but next time I see him I will ask him/her!

    Sorry to be running late.

I'm actually not a huge fan of GPO, but one of my all-time favorite albums is "Truth Will Out" by Pigface. Their output has always been so spotty, studio...live shows...always careening between genius and shit. "Truth Will Out" is a live album and it's fantastic beginning to end. I'm convinced it's due to Genesis's non-stop stream of consciousness tape loops running over the top of the whole thing.
