so how long have some of you been skiing/boarding? Like is it something really tough to pick up or is it up to par with say learning to ride a bike or rollerblade or something?

I feel odd that I ski but don't snowboard. snowboarding is so much more popular around these parts.

i grew up skiing, then started snowboarding 8 years ago. i love it. its my passion. its like an all day orgasm.



shaker - dont feel weird about not snowboarding, do what gets you off on the mountain...theres some resorts you go to that are almost all ski resorts...(hell, some dont even allow snowboards)

In ways it is, but I would say its different. Riding a bike doesnt really take much practice, once you know how to do it then your "good". Snowboarding takes alot of practice to go from the bunny hill to even just an intermediate run. You cant just "know" how to snowboard.

I could teach someone how to ride a bike in an hour tops, but it can take a whole weekend to get someone snowboarding.

I have two snowboards, 1 is a Burton Custom that has still has a $520 price tag on it it is green and beautiful! I've never been snowboarding...

Thats pretty funny. Customs are solid boards though. I have an old one that I've beat the shit out of over the years, it's now my early/late season rock board. My go-to is a custom Prior. It's a little board company based out of Whistler, a little heavier but a nice ride, its my winter pride and joy :^)

I ride a Burton Royale 163 with Cartel bindings now. My first board, which I still have, is a Burton Bullet 159.

I have never snow skied. I've been riding for about five years. Having some skateboarding experience, I thought it would be easy to pick up. I quickly found I was wrong. It took me about half a day to get confident enough to go to the top of the main run (blue). It was about two miles long with a few steep headwalls and some flats inbetween. The next day and a half where filled with lots of side slipping headwalls interspersed with actual riding on the flats. Once you get it, the progression goes pretty fast. By the third day, I was pretty confident and what I would consider a novice rider.

It really helps to go on extended trips where your experience can be built upon day after day as opposed to going for a a day or two at a time with long periods between.

I've been skiing since I was 3 years old, and living at mammoth ensured I skied quite a bit as a kid. I have had a few years without a solid season, plus I really fucked my ankle surfing in Hawaii a few years back and broke my hand in a High School state finals slalom race, so I'm not as good as I used to be. I can still run just about anything at Mammoth, but I'm not quite as fast and confident as I used to be.

i have a burton uninc, 158. thinking about getting a new board this year at snowjam, maybe a custom. until a couple years ago, my grandparents had a place walking distance from snow summit in big bear, so i grew up riding there, back when westridge was the sickest park ever, even before that actually. but then they moved all the jumps to bear. i almost cried when they sold that place. now i dont get to ride as much cuz renting a place is a pain in the ass. the snow in bear usually sucks, but the parks are soooo fun. as i get older though it hurts a lot worse when i fall, lol. i actually had one of the best powder days ive ever had a few years ago at summit. it was epic. ill probably hit up mammoth a couple times this year, and maybe colorado. if i can somehow get enough cash, id love to do whistler, but so fuckin expensive.

this is footage of me and my buddy from back in the day at snow summit. this was maybe 8-10 years ago when i was in college. most of it is me, and the slow part in the middle with the dude in the yellow shirt is my buddy. my other friend filmed and edited it all. i edited out a scene at the beginning and the middle that had our names, since i dont want you people knowing my full name. so if the song cuts for a second, that is why. man, this thread is getting me pumped for winter!

Mammoth has some amazing back country. If you're a really skilled rider, you should look up the trail to Hole in the Wall. You can only do it when it's been a big season, and you really have to be a talented rider to make it thru, but it's one of the coolest treks you'll ever take. You ski thru an avalanche chute worn thru the middle of a mountain, and then over a frozen lake. SO awesome.

And a guide on how to get there:
The Hole in the wall is a narrow opening through a cliff, and this steep chute is caused by erosion and the gravitational pull on the eroded material. This is a great run, but often will avalanche and it includes ice in the lower portion.

To reach the Hole, either ski County Line or the gully beneath the "Wave" to the end of the treeless slope, and then head left (east) on a traverse toward Twin Lakes. When it seems you must head down to the lake, a small, hanging valley will rise to the left and this is the route to the Hole.

If you decide against skiing the Hole this time, follow the valley down to the lake. However, following the slightly rising, hanging valley will lead directly to the Hole in the Wall.

The easiest way into the Hole is on the left side (looking down), and the most difficult is on the far right. On either side of the Hole are also several other radical chutes, the easiest of which is the far left-hand chute. This chute is nestled against the cliffs that are the end of the Dragon's Back area of Chair 9, and is sometimes skiable from the Tail area. Once down to Twin Lakes, cross the foot-bridge to your waiting car or follow Lake Mary Road down to Chair 15. Conditions in this area change constantly, so be sure you know exactly where you are going.
Bouncing off rocky cliffs will put an immediate end to your day.
