Just pick a show you wanna see and come then. No seated venue shows can't get into those for free.
Hmm...I'm supposed to be down in Fullerton on my birthday (nov 1) to see my sister in some play she's doing at the college....it's possible I could maybe try to come down a few days earlier (by bus or train?) and meet up with you guys and hang for a few days before her play....or we could work it out, I hang with you guys after her play for a few days....and then go back...I dunno. But I will be down there, so yeah we should try to work something out.

So... is it better to put education or experience first in a resume?

I was always under the impression that education preceded experience.

That's what I thought too, until our PR person offered to review my resume for me, and told me to totally reorganize it! She recommends that I change the order to:

    1. Employment History (only titles, companies and dates but no duties)
    2. Skills & Experience (duties, accomplishments, abilities)
    3. Education
    4. Grants/Fellowships/Awards
    5. Languages
    6. Computer Skills
    7. Community Service & Professional Organizations

She also says that I should completely delete my section for publications and presentations. I am so confused.

This is how I have mine, and how I've been told to in the past. I could imagine various permutations being best for different kinds of positions:

    1. Education
    2. Employment history (duties/accomplishments/responsibilities integrated for each individual entry)
    3. Grants/Fellowships/Awards/Academic Presentations etc
    4. Teaching/Community Service
    5. Computer/Technical Skills

The language I speak (Indonesian) isn't really applicable for the most part...

I've gone through more than half a dozen recruiters since I've been in LA and every single one of them had a different resume form they wanted me to adhere to. I don't think any of them know dick.

lead with your strong suit. if you think your education puts your best foot forward lead with that. if you think it's experience lead with that. important stuff first, then other stuff after.

Yeah, I've always read that, right out of college and for the first few years, it's best to put education first since that's what you'd been focusing on for the past few years.

Yeah. I meant like in the 70's when the rubber industry supposedly started to decline. It's been like this ever since I can remember, so at least 22 years.

What did you have at the top? Education? That's really only relevant if you are freshly out of school (or have drastically changed careers as a result of recent schooling).

Otherwise order is based on your field and the job you are applying for. If you're not sure about her advice, google nonprofit / arts resume examples. I would think grant writing experience would be more important to a potential employer than where you went to college.

She's probably suggesting you delete the publications portion because of length. How many pages is your CV right now? I do not work in nonprofits any longer, but have never met a manager at any level who has bothered to read resumes much past the first page. You can keep the information, separately, and send in upon request (and take to interview in case you have an opportunity to prevent it).

Similarly interests, community service, etc are too much information unless it's immediately relevant.

Keep in mind, especially as the economy tanks and it becomes more an employer's market, hiring managers will see tons of resumes for any good job, if you can't catch their attention within the first 1/2 page, you have no shot. Usually the first 1/3-1/2 page actually is read, then front page skimmed. Flip to the back page to check for a degree and note what field and if the school is prestigious.

Nonprofits resumes are a little different, but honestly, when presented with a resume that is more than 2 pages, the person better have YEARS of great experience to justify the length or else I feel my time is wasted.

Thanks Jared, Randy, Tom, Bryan and Heidi for the advice. I guess I'm going to have to re-evaluate a lot of my standard resume conventions now that I'm out of grad school and into the working world. Which makes sense.

I have been out of school for two years now. So I don't know if that counts as recently out of school. I guess I have always just put education first because it is what I am most proud of. But maybe it's not what is most impressive to an outside reader.

My community service stuff is definitely immediately relevant because it's stuff like organizing art conferences, chairing fundraiser exhibits, etc. But I guess something has to go if everything needs to fit on two pages. Two pages is really short!

I am going to go google sample resumes.

Well, 2 years out of school is pretty recent, but is the degree your strongest point? Maybe if it's a very prestigious school or program. TomAz's advice was best - you always lead strong.

I look have to look at resumes and hire people for stuff sometimes.. I want to know What you did, where you worked, what you accomplished there. I dont really care about your education unless you haven't worked anywhere or have any relevant experience, THEN I might care but most likely will toss your resume in the trash.

At a local established internet startup. It's mid-sized for a startup, with about 30 folks there. I'm working on the product development team doing SDET stuff. Decent pay, with serious bumps if it works out. And great experience that ensures me a job in the future in similar positions if need be. It's a bit of a commute ('bout 40 minutes via bus, which isn't actually that bad) but I'm happy.

I am now among the ranks of freshly unemployed. They laid-off my entire project team (5 of us).

It's been almost 9 years since I have had to look for a job.

    And, I live in California.

i daily fantasize about not having my current job, but loyalty, people i werk with who are like family and the appreciation some who don't have jobs tell me i should have keeps me in there. If i was in the unemployment situation, driving across our fine land and taking a bazillion pictures was the therapy i would give myself before trying to place my ass back on the employment rolls.

To all who are seeking, good luck.
