It looks so fun on Cash Cab. Maybe you should start a TV game show that takes place right there in your cab.

-Money... I gotta figure out how taxes work, as that's going to be a pretty big hit all at once, but it'll work out.
My sister had a job last year as a massage therapist that she received a 1099 Misc for instead of a W-2 and she ended up owing a lot at the end of the year. I tried doing her taxes on Turbotax and her liability was at $600 for federal & state. She took her paperwork to a friend's mom, who happens to be an accountant, and that lady was able to take it down to where my sister got $50 back from the state & owed only $400 to federal, so about a $250 difference.

I think Jen's dad is a contractor, or has been, and if not I can check with one of my coworkers about what you'll want to do. One thing I do know is that you're going to be responsible for both employee & employer portions of Social Security and Medicare, so that'll be 10.4% for SS & 2.9% for MC. I don't know what you're claiming on federal or how your state income tax works, but I think trying to set aside 20% of what you earn for taxes is going to significantly lessen the impact at the end of the year.

Yeah, I'm officially an independent contractor for all my freelance writing jobs, and taxes are a bitch. I ended up having to register as a Sole Proprietorship to get a Hawaii tax ID number for my jobs, and now I have to pay taxes twice per year and they are a fuckload.

Figure out as many ways to legitimately write off things you buy as business expenses.

Had what was called an interview at the USPS today. Pending a drug screening, seems I'll be a relief mail carrier. I was told about how safety was of utmost importance and then given an example of some one who was not being safe. It ended up in rolling a mail truck. It had just happened a couple of days before. Crazy.

Hopefully you possess the ability to go postal.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

No call from the post office yet. Not really expecting one now. I am going to go meet with some people from Schuff construction on Friday, but I'm not expecting anything from that either. Looking for work has been fucking insane.

Marooko do what ever you can to learn Revit. Many of the big Arch/MEP/Struct companies in Vegas wont even look at drafters resumes if they don't have Revit knowledge. A large amount of structural engineering firms in Vegas are switching over to Revit because many of the large Architectural firms are now becoming Revit only.

That's a little bit of a pisser for me. mainly because there is no where close by for me to learn any of the new software. And the places I do find all seem to be 2-4 years schools which would really only touch on it. I don't need to go over PC and drafting basics anymore. Fucking sucks.

I'm still looking and have a couple short term options, but even they seem sketchy. I can go to Georgia and learn Tekla, but that's only 5 days of classes for 2k. But again, still on the table at the moment, just need the money.

Wanted to clarify, I haven't been looking much for Revit because around me it seems Tekla is more popular. But Revit wouldn't hurt so I should look in to that as well. And is Revti for Architectural mainly? In the construction industry mainly, cause I need structural training.

When I was unemployed I knew that I had to learn Revit so I download a copy and I just started to fuck around with it. I read the tutorial that comes with it and downloaded handouts from AUGI and Autodesk University to help me learn the basics. It's a little tough at first when you have no one helping you out but after a few hours it gets pretty easy to use.

Good luck with Telka. I've talked to a few architects that have used Telka because they worked for Frank Gehry and they all hated it. I know some firms still use it but there are not that many left.

That's just the thing, I'm not in the Architectural field. I do structural steel. But I will look in to Revit as well. If it gets me in some where else, I'll be happy with that. ha!

Went up to Schuff today. It was supposed to be very casual with no expectations. Glad I brought my resume because I was asked for one. Not gonna get excited, but I would totally be thrilled to work there. Sure it's in Stockton, but it's still one of the top contractors in the country. Makes the top 600, many times in the top 50. While I wouldn't be detailing, my experience would definitely help me in which ever of the two positions available, which was why my name was even brought up.

My current position ends in two weeks, when my co-worker comes back from maternity leave. It turns out another co-worker of mine, the woman who was my supervisor when I was a student assistant and who does the other half of the administrative work in the office, is going on maternity leave in June for one year and I have been formally offered the position. It's of course, not my "dream" job but naturally I still have no idea or motivation to figure out what that might be. It pays nicely enough, it's only Monday - Thursday, and I really enjoy all of my coworkers. It also means I'm moving the fuck back to San Francisco or at least much closer.

I do have an unemployment question: I also currently work a part time job on the weekends that yields me a couple hundred a month. I'll still be doing this job in March, April, and May until the full time position begins. Am I eligible for unemployment at some level during these months?

Pretty sure you can get partial. Others may be able to elaborate on this. Glad I could help.

You can apply for unemployment, as long as your weekly wages (part time wages + unemployment) do not exceed 60% of your weekly earnings from your highest quarter when you were employed or $450 per week.

And I feel your pain on the unemployment forms. I was laid off end of December. I was too lazy to finish my paperwork and completely missed my "phone interview."

Got an email this morning for another loose interview on Monday. We'll see how it goes. Oh and fuck you.

I'm so fucking swamped right now. Fuck me, too.

Responded to the email and got a response back in just a few minutes. Going in on Monday to see what's up.

Officially got my job offer today. I start working again in the beginning of June. My extended gin and pill vacation is sadly coming to an end.
