Yeah, that could have helped. It wasn't a legitimate complaint or anything though, not that that clarifies any of the confusion. But yeah, I'm looking for a company position also.

I've stayed on as a full-time salaried employee at a place even though I could potentially make triple what i make freelancing because the downtime can be so brutal, and I get a ton of flexibility and health insurance at job. Luckily they have no problem with me taking freelance work and I even get to use their facility for it!

Eff you, dude. That's awesome as shit. I got laid-off. I should have started while I was still on a payroll, might have a better customer base right now. Ok now I'm really out, it's fucking late.

Bummer. Sounds like you made some great professional contacts throughout the process that will hopefully reap rewards somewhere down the line.

Fuck this job market. They hired someone with a phd for a job that includes basic clerical work and pays under 40k. I hate this. I don't know whether to scream or cry. Fuck.

Feel better that you're not the poor sucker that went through the process of getting a phd and had to settle for a job that they're so overqualified for.

i thought most businesses stayed away from hiring the overqualified since they assume they will just get bored in a matter of months. the job should go to someone who wants it, not someone who is just looking to make ends meet for the time being. sorry, courtney! take a nice drive over to wailua bakery and grab a yummy sandwich...or crack a bottle of whiskey

It really does suck, but you do currently have a job. Feel better about that as well.

She's overqualified for her current job. I'm sorry, Courtney. I really thought you were going to get it.

    Just sayin'.

I might be an on-call driver for a fucking van. It's a goddamn job. That I'm very much over qualified for. Guess I need to complain about it.

It fucking absolutely sucks, but some people applying may not even have a job. In all of these circumstances.

Thank you all. I will be ok. I just needed to have a moment of denial. And then anger. And then sadness. And now acceptance.

It's really their loss. Overqualified people are not loyal to a job that they are overqualified for. That person will be using that company's computer, telephone, and time looking for a job that will pay them what they think they are worth.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

it was the "for the time being" part. it was just eluded to in the post above this one. someone just there to make ends meet until something better comes along is not really a smart investment.

I think given the job market in my field, it will be at least another couple of years before things bounce back, so the phd was smart to take the job. But it still sucks for everybody.

Also I know this is a severe case of White People Problems, but I'm not sure which is worse: not getting the job or being ruthlessly chastised by my father for not asking him to pull strings so that I could get the job through nepotism. Ugh.

Sorry about the job, Courtney. But I have every bit of faith in you finding yourself in a place that you enjoy. Just be persistent, no matter what, even if it seems like it's taking too long.

Definitely white people problems. Black fathers aren't even around for that kind of stuff.

Sorry to hear that, Courtney. I know a guy with 5 years' experience in broadcast journalism and two PHDs (one from Yale) who is now working as a [barely] paid intern. This job market sucks. This is a bit Pollyanna-ish, but not getting this job will make you available for that next great opportunity. It happened to me, I'm sure it will happen for you eventually. And, hey, if you're qualified for the job, nepotism is just another word for networking. I wouldn't feel guilty about leveraging any relationship you have; even... Daddy.

Heh, sucks for Yale PhD dude. I can't even imagine. But thank you for your optimism about the whole "available for the next opportunity" thing, RATA. I hope that's true.

Hrm... I'm not sure I agree about the nepotism thing. For me, it would depend on whether people I worked more directly with would think I'd gotten the job unfairly. (I wouldn't want to have to work with people who were predisposed to dislike me because of it).

And I agree with RATA... the right job will come along. It's still a bummer though.

There's nothing wrong with pulling strings or networking to get a job imo. Honestly, if you don't do it, there is somebody that probably will.

Nepotism is nothing more than a relationship with a head-start. What's the difference between that and having a friend or professional contact in a similar position with similar pull?

Meanwhile, Mr. Yale Kolohe Haole can shove his sweater vest down ahi'ai honua and Honi ko'u 'elemu.
