IDM and techno were going on at the same time pretty much. A lot of it was all regional. I grew up in Dallas which had a huge early hardcore breakbeat/very early jungle scene in the late 80s/early 90s. When I was in High School (yea I'm old) EDM was stuff like Prodigy circa 1991. Richie Hawtin was putting out would later be called Minimal under Plasticman and Hardcore under names like Cybersonik but that stuff wasn't played really in Dallas. Now I have a friend who is my age and grew up in Detroit and she went to all those Techno parties because that is what EDM was to her and that is what was played where she lived. San Fransisco had their own speacial form of pyschadelic house/progressive trance championed by people like the Hardkiss Brothers. Hell even early pystrance/goa was being done in the early 90s. I guess what I am trying to say is that really all of this music was going on at once.

A lot of it is spot on though. I can't speak for every genre but all the D&B is right. There are certain genres the guy pokes fun at but it's actually pretty good. It needs to be updated however.

Okay...And I thought that Rock n' Roll having heavy metal, country rock, classic rock, death metal, etc.etc.etc. had me confused...Christ, by the time I figure out my favorite genre, this poll may be history!
1. Run to a nice patch of grass on the fields and lay face down.
2. Tilt your head ninety degrees with your forehead temple resting on your forearm and watch people through the vision pocket right underneath your armpit hair.
3. Do this for a few hours until you get comfortable.
A Daft Punk thread containing 'nothing of substance'. How bout that.
House mostly.
But me loves all sorts of electronic music.
Electro-rock isn't on there tho. Just sayin'.
Theres way too many sub genres to list.
House
Techno
IDM
Ambient
Trip Hop
Am i the only one who gets slightly annoyed when people refer to anything remotely electronic sounding as TECHNO.
For most people, TECHNO conjures up thoughts of euro dance stuff and puts electronic music in general in a silly light.
not that euro dance techno sheeit isn't ok...i got all nostalgiac the other day for old euro hits from the likes of 2 Unlimited, Snap!, La Bouche, Culture Beat, and Capellea![]()
Ambiant
Whiskey Sour
2 oz blended whiskey
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 tsp powdered sugar
1 cherry
1/2 slice lemon
Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.
I like DnB a lot but I voted Ambiant...
drum and bass for me
this thread is weak cos' there's so many genres missing and you could have a few types of House,Tech,Dub,DnB etc. I mean I love House as much as DnB as much as Ambient House as much as 94' Jungle as much as Tech House,Acid House,Dub Tech,Broken Dub, Nu Dub,Exotica etc.....
Happy Hardcore FTW!!!
worst poll ever.
Upcoming Shows:
Pitchfork Festival: 7/19 @ Union Park
Mountain Oasis Festival: 10/25-27
I chose ambient, could not really find a more accurate word. Example. Where would Prodigy fit in?

me thinks electro-rock or bigbeat.
this is actually really good. it cracks me up when people so NO!! it went like this!!!. Well yeah, where you grew up. but where i grew up it went like this. yes, there was a major foundation in new york/detroit/san francisco, but each had its own thing. they all took what they learned in europe and other places throughout the states, brought it back home and made it their own.
one of my fav. stories is the one of Frankie Bones. Now that guy, (minus everyone in the detroit area) was a major part of spreading the scene. i take detroit out of that equation because they started there own thing. and i fucking love it. Techno will always have a place in my heart.
yeah, that really upsets me too. i never argue it though. they'll never get it.
also, 2 unlimited for the fucking WIN!! havent heard those guys in a long ass while. no no no no, no no no no, no no theres no limit!!! hell yeah.
all fucking sub genres. i dont think this poll sucks at all. most of the major genres are covered. most others can fall under subs (technically, i know). the only thing i dont like about it is that techno jumbled in with trance. thats a slap in the fucking face.
i hope you're joking.
umph umph umph tiff
dont get it confused with umph tiss umph tiss umph tiss
Frankie used to post a lot on the discogs.com forums. Who knows he may still but I haven't kept up in years. Anyway he used to have a lot of really hilarious and insightful stuff to say about the old days. He was a bit full of himself at times but one of my favorite regular posters.
