Posted this in the EDC thread too...

If anyone cares, here's Basement Jaxx' DJ set at Electric Daisy Carnival this year.
There are a lot of parts that get echoey (not sure if its the soundsystem, venue, or recording) throughout, but it's not unlistenable.

With that said, I still find their LIVE sets more entertaining.

I'm sure Basement Jaxx would be a blast live, but this video highlights the main problem on taking an act that relies on guests vocalists into a live setting. I'm not sure anyone but Siouxsie can do this song justice.

She was also very ill that day. Almost didn't perform. It's all in some mini docu about their coachella performance which I saw a long time ago, no idea where it is now.

That video is from a festival in Belgium. She was ill before Coachella. Just sayin'.
    Same shit, different day.

In any case, I love that version of Cish Cash.

For the most part, the touring vocalists handle the songs just fine.

They need to do a co-headlining tour in the US with some other group, since they won't do it on their own (!)

Basement Jaxx are usually pretty good, but I didn't like their set at Smokeout. I would definately love to have them back for Coachella though (preferably LIVE but DJ set would suffice).

The only time I've seen Basement Jaxx was when they opened up for Beck at LA Detour Fest in 07(?). It was a live set, and the highlight of the fest. Totally blew Beck out of the water.

    I think that was 06.

also, Hunter has pointed out previously that the "live set" more than a few years ago was a lot more like their dj set is now.

All I know is there were dudes in gorilla suits hanging off the scaffolding and large black women singing at the top of their lungs.

There were lots of live instruments, drums, bass etc.

Yeah, the first half of the set was pretty bad ass imo, with the Raindrops (Funkagenda rmx) and awesome mix of Stranger to Stability.....then they started playing a bunch of dubstep into Bohemian Rhapsody......that song has rubbed me the wrong way my whole life, especially since all the glee kids at my elementary and middle school would sing it on the bus for field trips, so every time I hear it, it's an automatic "stfu".........I actually was so disappointed, that I left that stage for something else, cuz ANYTHING is better than Bohemian Rhapsody to me, and I couldn't just wait for them to mix into a new song.......but yes, EM should be dope, lol.........

oh, that's definitely more live than what we are getting now. I retract my previous statement.

Yeah. When they first started out, it was pretty much just them on stage with a percussionist and 1 or 2 vocalists, outside of DJ sets.

I think in 2006, they did like 3 shows in the US that were 'live'. Detour, NY, and something else...

    Metropole Orkest vs. Basement Jaxx

Metropole Orkest is pleased to announce the world premiere of its unique collaboration with British dance music duo Basement Jaxx on Friday 4 February 2011 in Eindhoven.

Metropole Orkest will be performing classical and contemporary orchestral versions of the many hits of Basement Jaxx, including "Red Alert", "Where's Your Head At", "Good Luck" and "Raindrops", conducted and orchestrated by leading London composer, Jules Buckley, in collaboration with Basement Jaxx themselves, and featuring many of the singers from their legendary live show which has graced the main stages of the worlds major music festivals including Lowlands and Pinkpop in the Netherlands. The evening will also include the very first performances of some new Basement Jaxx material, written by Felix Buxton, especially for this event.

    Oh and also..

Basement Jaxx to score sci-fi movie

Basement Jaxx are to follow in Daft Punk's neon-traced footsteps, soundtracking a forthcoming sci-fi film. The DJ duo have reportedly written the score for Attack the Block, a British action-comedy that pits yobs against aliens.

Although Basement Jaxx have yet to confirm this, Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright broke the news on Twitter. "Heard some of Basement Jaxx's score for Joe Cornish's Attack the Block yesterday," he wrote (via the Playlist). "Still humming it today. #GoodStuff." This is the debut feature for Cornish, one half of comedy duo Adam and Joe. He recently worked with Wright, revising Steven Moffat's Tintin screenplay for Steven Spielberg.

This will be Basement Jaxx's first foray into film scores, despite contributing songs to soundtracks including Bend It Like Beckham and, er, Just Married. But Daft Punk's acclaimed score for Tron: Legacy has proved there is a strong market for sci-fi/electronica crossovers, and Basement Jaxx seem an appropriate choice for a film whose tag-line is, "Inner City v Outer Space". Attack the Block, which stars Jodie Whittaker and Luke Treadaway, is due in April.

Difficult to judge, but looks like the opposite of what I'd want out of a Basement Jaxx show. Low energy; especially on a stage where there's barely room for the performers. I love classical concerts (having the LA Phil in my backyard is a blessing) but I hate it when pop/electro/indie/rock/whatever artists seem to think having an orchestra backing them makes their music more significant in some way. Sometimes it ends up smothering the energy of the music; especially when the orchestra isn't nimble enough to keep up.

This isn't the best audio, but i'm just posting it 'cause of how absurdly close this person was to the stage.

And yes, the singers had next to no room to move around, but i suppose it was more about the orchestra.

    Here's the full setlist:

1-Battlement Jaxx (Crazy Itch Radio Intro)
    2-Red Alert
    3-Raindrops
    4-My Turn
    5-Mozart's Tea Party
    6-Bingo Bango
    7-Hush Boy
    8-Where's Your Head At
    9-Good Luck
    10-Lights Go Down
    11-If I Ever Recover
    12-Hey U
    13-Don't Give Up
    14-Do Your Thing
    15-Romeo
    16-Samba Magic

I'm only disappointed they didn't do STOP 4 LOVE from Remedy. Instead they did DON'T GIVE UP.

Edit: I stand corrected. DONT GIVE UP appears to be great with the orchestra and choir!

And zomg, IF I EVER RECOVER!
