So...all I can listen to is The Walkmen You & Me

This album is incredible. It reminds me of last year when summer started to wane into fall and the national's boxer took over my life. I'm not saying it's as good as Boxer, but it's damn close. The vocals, the drums, everything is so subtle and fierce. I've never even been a huge fan of the Walkmen but now I think I should get the rest of their albums.

I'm going with my brother and he is a big Atmosphere fan, so sacrifices must be made. Atmosphere is one of the few acts that he cares about, so yeah. We are going to Atmosphere and DIOYY? right after, and staying there for Man Man. I've seen the National twice this year(Coachella, Lolla) so I'll be alright.

I don't mean to pull a Kenado here but I was thinking about this last night as something I wanted learned feedback on.

The Walkmen are right up my alley. Tight, passionate, good hard rock. This is the sort of stuff I cut my teeth on. Right in my wheelhouse.

So why don't I like them more? I don't think I like them very much at all and I can't figure out why. They sound very.. I dunno. commercial. artless. something like that. I was out walking last night and 'The Rat' came up on my iPod and yes that's a good song, I know, but for some reason the whole repeating of "now I go out alone, if I go out at all" just made me think of Bon Jovi.

Thinking of Bon Jovi is not a good thing.

I saw the Walkmen a few years ago at Coachella. My friends and I were shrooming and when we walked into Coachella, the first thing we saw was The Walkmen playing "The Rat". It was amazing. I've been a fan ever since.

What is it about that line that makes you think of Bon Jovi?

oooo, this makes my blood boil. pretty arrogant and ignorant statement, me thinks. are you just relying on "The Rat" to substantiate this claim?

if they were more commercial, i'd expect more fans/haters around these parts. their catalog as a whole isn't exactly what i would categorize as commercial - mostly slow-building songs, fewer fast/aggressive and catchy songs. much of their catalog requires some patience and time, but man is the payoff swell. there's a timeless quality to their music that's hard to find these days.

i'm not sure how familiar you are with their catalog, Tom. but i'd be astounded if you characterized this small sampling of songs "artless"

for the record, "the rat" is probably their most commercial sounding, and i've been a big fan since "everybody who pretended..." if anything they've gotten more "arty" as they've progressed, but "bows + arrows" is still my favorite, and i await each new album when they come. i think they have a classic in them, to me that's "bows + arrows" right now, but we'll see.

four original full-lengths since 2002, and three of this four i'd rate as pretty spectacular. A Hundred Miles Off aside, these guys are consistent.
