Portland, Oregon

What is it like? I was thinking about a future move there. Is is really as dreary as they say? How are the venues, economy, local music scene? Please discuss.

it is gray and dreary for about 8 months of the year. I grew up there. They do have a great music scene though. Last I heard the economy wasn't doing very well but that was a couple years ago, not sure how it is now.

Portland is an incredibly vibrant community, but in it's own particular way.

It's definitely more laid back, so most of the partying/low-key show scene happens in basements and houses. Everyone is really personable and the music scene is incredible. They have great food...

Music venues are solid, especially for small/medium size shows. Never been to a big show down there, but worst case is you have White River and the Gorge right up the street. Lots of great bands his Portland, most I would say, and anyone that doesn't probably hits Seattle (2-2.5 hours away).

The economy has been hit pretty hard... The weather doesn't bother me, but I'm a NW native.

I love Portland, but it definitely helps if you love the rain(I do), and heroin(I don't)

how expensive is housing? I was looking at it as maybe a lower cost Seattle. I don't know how much longer I could take the chilly Denver winters. I am coming in on my 2nd year anniversary and I am not looking forward to those negative temps again. Maybe the next few years of Red Rocks will convince me otherwise. This year was no where near as good as last.

I'm hopefully on my way to Portland soon as well. I've got no problem with the rain, though I'm sure it gets a bit miserable in mid-winter. I just feel at home when I'm there. My wife's company closed shop here, so we're going to try to take it as an opportunity to get out of AZ.

yeah, cost of housing is a little cheaper than Seattle... A little easier to find in the good/fun neighborhoods... Jobs are about as hard to find there as here though (something I'm currently dealing with myself).

How much cheaper are we talking about here? above or below 300k? Jobs wouldn't be an issue as long as I stay with the same company now. They have hotels all over the US. Are you unemplyed sir? What is your line of work? And how far of a drive is the Gorge?

Fuck! I wish I lived in Louisville! I live in effing Frederick! And, yes I don't ski or snowboard (mostly because I can't afford it). I am DREADING the winter already. This will be my 3rd real winter, so I am still getting used to it. Hopefully, the next few years of Red Rocks will convince me otherwise.

Oh fredrick!.....There are a lot of great shows in Denver too. Yeah if I didnt grow up here loving winter I would probably hate it too. If you dig portland and seattle consider Vancouver B.C. the looney is up against the dollar and its a fantastic city.

I hear Vancouver is pricey though...In the future if we stay in Denver..we will most likely move downtown...

I've been looking a lot online, and there's a lot of good stuff between 225 and 300K. There's even a lot of houses at 175k, though they're really old houses that probably still have questionable wiring.

The west side suburbs seem to have a lot of bang for the buck, and it seems like the commute isn't all that bad from my very limited experience. Maybe after I live there a while it will get tiresome. I have a friend who lives in Beaverton and works right downtown, around Nob Hill. When he gets tired of the commute, he drives this road...I want to say Cornwall, but I'm not sure. It runs from out at Orenco Station in Hillsboro, up through Cedar Mills in Beaverton, and over the hill through the forest, right into downtown. SUCH a beautiful drive. It only took 15 minutes or so for me to do it, and I was probably driving extra slow because it's so wind-y and I wasn't sure where I was going. I don't think I would want to do it in the winter though, I bet it gets icy up there.

In my town, you won't find anything online under 225k, period. And anything decent is over 325k. I would bet Denver is similar, yes?

You could probably find a good house for around 250-300K... depending on what you are looking for. my guess is anything really decent that won't need work in the near future would be 300-350.

I'm almost unemployed, on the end of a temp job. I've worked mostly in tech support, computing specialist, and some software testing. A little bit of whatever, I haven't buckled down and committed to anything yet because my goal is to go off to grad school in a year.

And the Gorge is about 4 hours from Portland.

This is what is weird about Portland. There are always at the top of these global cities list for livability and sustainability. Monocle had Portland in their 25 cities for livability.
