hi portland! i am probably going to come visit in february, most likely president's day. any recommendations on interesting and/or cheap places to stay in the downtown portland area? preferably as close to here as possible. my girlfriend's living situation is weird so i can't stay with her.

also, it looks like mount hood is about 2 hours or so from downtown. how is that drive in the winter? are snow chains or anything required?

I've been wanting to stay at the schoolhouse too. There's also a couple of hostels downtown with private rooms that don't look terrifying.

Depends on your experience of driving in those conditions. It isn't something I would recommend doing with a hire car or a quick jaunt, you have to check the weather and driving conditions, then pack for an emergency. People get stuck up there every winter.

But yeah snow chains are the law:

"Oregon's chain law applies to all highways throughout the state. When you drive in winter conditions, you may see signs telling you to carry chains or traction tires and when you are required to use them."

We're staying at the Jupiter

The Jupiter is a cool hotel. Its the hotel attached to the Doug Fir lounge, which often has great shows and is probably the coolest venue in Portland. If there is anyone playing there that you have any interest in seeing you should probably go to the show. Also the food at the Doug Fir is pretty good, and the Union Jack strip club on the same block is a good time.

When we moved to Portland a few years ago we stayed at the Jupiter because they allowed pets, ended up going to see the New Mastersounds at the Doug Fir on the day that we drove in (cross country from Atlanta). Saw an awesome show and the band was hanging out at the hotel/bar afterwards which was cool.

that schoolhouse hotel happens to be the closest to redbird studio, sweet. i'm not sure if i want to spend that much money though, i still need to figure out the full plan. president's day may be pushing it money wise, but i'd like to go over a three-day weekend and would also like to snowboard if possible. and thanks for the tip on the snow chains, i wouldn't be driving, but good to know.

any other hotel options are welcome this looks kinda cool.

I have stayed at both Hotel Modera and Crystal Hotel in Portland, and would recommend both with enthusiasm.

what's it like to ride bikes in february in portland? is this even possible?

It's not that cold. It'll most likely be drizzly. It is definitely possible depending on how much you mind getting wet.

Honestly most of the PNW runs between 35-50 in winter. It's not that crazy. We'll all get days where it gets below 20, but those are definitely unusual.

Early morning rides might have frost/ice but it will clear up before noon.

Also, Ivy, if the public transpo is really great there; in the inner part of downtown, it's free to ride.

There was also an interesting farm hotel option that I looked at once. If I find it, I'll post it.

i will *officially* be in portland friday, march 9th through sunday, march 11th. my friend is playing a music event at some saturday market thing, but other than that, no solid plans. i will be spending most of the weekend with her, but i know some of you live there and i'd like to see you, even if just for a minute! and i'd like to ask alma for some gluten free soup

Portland, I will be inside of you March 7th - 11th. I have a lot of family there and will be with them most of the time, but I am most likely going to see Crocodiles at Doug Fir Lounge on 03/07 and possibly the Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker and Yim Yames on 03/09 assuming it's not sold out. Anyone that wants to meet up or is going to those show?
