my first year was the worst year, 2003 ... wasn't ready for the heat, and wasn't ready for the wind @ night ...

I've walked across icy bridges with whipping winds and below zero wind chills in Boston that hurt less then my first 55-60 degree night after a 95-100 degree desert day.

Here are some high and low temperatures for today:

Minneapolis = -9...2 F
St. Louis = 12...16 F
Missoula = 33...44 F
Orlando = 46...56 F
Tucson = 40...80 F

It's freezing in Minneapolis but it's that way all day. You dress the same for -9 F and 2 F; you dress very differently for 40 F and 80 F.

And this is what we see, year round. That's how you make it through 110 F during the day; you remember it's going to be 60-70 F at night.

I think the temperature change is kinda being blown out of proportion. I was there in '04 and '05 and though it got noticeably colder, I would say that it was far from "cold" at night. This is especially not noticeable if you're in the middle of a crowd. If you want to lug around a long sleeve shirt all day, be my guest, but you'll be fine without one.

I think I've only brought a light flannel once. This is mainly because I don't bring a backpack and I don't want to walk around with a flannel tied to my waist.

Also you do get adjusted to warm/desert weather. I hardly ever wore long pants the first several years I was here.

At any rate the temperature changes can be extreme and anyone bringing a backpack would be wise to stash a light jacket or something but unless it's abnormally cool I won't be following my own advice.

When I get back to my tent will be a different story.

Yeah - it does get cool. Imagine sweating all day...like really, really sweating in the sun. Your shit gets wet and you need to drink a ton of liquid. Then its like someone turns out the lights and cranks the AC. It doesn't get that cold, but its like those summer days when you walk into a store and its just too cold inside...know what I mean?

Anyway, just stick a hoody or something in your bag and you'll be all set. You still might be a bit cool, but there is no need to change into pants...at least, there shouldn't be any reason.

srsly. I hate when people try to claim some measure of superiority because "it's colder here". It may be 0 degrees in somewhere right now, but when it's that cold you don't hang out outdoors all day. Negative with the windchill? Congratulations, are you sitting outside with a laptop typing that message? No. you're in a heated building. I've spent the majority of my life in the northeast where, just like much of the country, it can get below 0 and above 100 (with 95%+ humidity). Life goes on. You don't get awards for tolerating weather. You suck it up or move.

And the whole "it's cold in the desert" thing is relative , just as others have said. If you're sweating in 100+ weather all day you will feel cold if it's 60 and windy just a few hours later. It doesn't matter where you're from or how tough you think you are. The only difference is some people complain more.

People mocking or making fun of Californians for having comfortable weather is pretty funny.
