Edit: It's extremely poppy. However, after hearing this, I've got to say that if there's any band about which I'm excited at the prospect of transforming into a "pop" act, it's this one. The song is pretty scorching, despite the "Momma's gonna buy you a mockingbird" verse. It hits all of the marks for what I personally want out of this band at this particular moment.
    Snap. Must listen.

Also, someone mentioned they thought Glassjar was "poppy" as well. I certainly didn't hear anything "poppy" in the song. Maybe I just don't know what the term means anymore.

EDIT* I can definitely hear some poppy elements in Mindkilla. I dig. Fits in with the new material they played at the Troubadour last year.

Does anyone think this song sounds a bit Grizzly Bear-ish?

i dunno, it sounds like a twangier version of old school Low to me (i haven't listened to their last few albums, although I should, clearly). The song is however, great. Wow.

I mean, even foregoing Cortez the Killer, Drive Back, Barstool Blues, Stupid Girl, Pardon My Heart and Danger Bird are all pretty much stone cold classic style songs for any other artist.

Fuck yes. Danger Bird is one of my favorite songs in Neil's entire discog. I also like the light breeziness of Lookin' For a Love, even if it is kind of boiler plate for that kind of song.

I was just told by my queer studies professor at the UC I go to, when asked if I could use Queen as a subject for an essay we have to do on gay musicians, that she "has no idea who Queen is" and "I doubt this lead musician you speak of helped shaped the queer music scene in any way, or else I would know of them."

Today's subject is ironically AIDS in the 80's.

I wish I was making this up. Oh, how I wish I was making this up, because that would mean I wasn't ridiculed by my professor infront of the entire lecture class for knowing who Queen is.

We did watch this, so it's not like today was a total waste or anything:

My professor is a snap diva, and she is not to be messed with.

Heh. Had to click on the "Venus In Furs" one. They played the original in between sets at the show I was at tonight, and it made me realize how much I really love the Velvet Underground and how timeless their music is. They're one of those bands who it seems like you're supposed to know why you're supposed to like them and why they're important and etcetcetc more than anyone really listens to them. But fuck, that shit holds up so well.

    LAST DANCE!!!!

I just found this, and now have the complete run of classic Neil records. Last Dance is a beast of a song, and I can't believe he's neglected this album for so long. It's really something.

testament to the man's body of work that he's in no rush to release on cd what many other artists would be proud to call their own.

So, did Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds officially break up or something? When's the last time they toured the US? I know Grinderman did a few shows here not too long ago...

Yeah, seems like Nick Cave appearances are rare in this country.

Speaking of which, my boss and I were listening to the Birthday Party at work yesterday and he asked me if I had heard of an Australian band called Feedtime, which I hadn't. He played me their stuff, which is absolutely fucking nasty. They take the blues and drone on it super loud and sludgy. Totally awesome band, and I guess they recently reunited or something. Anyway, I think you guys will dig them. Conveniently this blog has all their albums for download. You're welcome in advance.

I was thinking of making a Jukebox cheat sheet thread of good songs that are 5+ minutes to get your money's worth.I'm just wondering if that's a dumb idea?

Are you talking the average jukebox? If so, I think you have a HUGE problem in that, outside of digital jukeboxes, you're at the whim of the place you're at, so you don't really have a good basis. Now, if you could make a good database for bars in your area, that'd be badass.

And maybe I'm confused and Jukebox is different from a jukebox and I'm an old man at 25.

However, if you don't like a bar and they have a digital jukebox and you're willing to make life hell for everyone there, pay the 28 bucks and play all of Captain Beefheart-Trout Mask Replica. It's always the best way to fuck with a bar of assholes or douchebags.
