Thanks guys! Those look incredible (especially the art)! I'm freeleeching the hell outta them.

YES. That is far and away the best the Pogues album, although Peace and Love is nearly as great. But they pick up on the vibrancy of Irish music so perfectly on Rum. The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn inspired me to read the Cuchulainn epics, and he was a fascinating legend. Still not as exciting as that song though.

I was listening to Yoko by Beulah today and even though it's been something I've heard countless times before over the span of a decade, I was blown away by the songwriting and emotional impact of these songs. Also the whole story of how it was their last record and they essentially knew it before release (hence the album title) kind of boggles my mind.

Anyone ever listen to these dudes?

A song from that album just came up on shuffle tonight, really good stuff. I haven't listened to them hardly at all before, but they're on the to-do list.
    8/31 - Sleep - Troubadour (?)
    9/05 - The Rentals - Fonda (?)
    9/11 - Swans - Roxy
    9/13 - Owen Pallett - El Rey (?)
    9/17 - Buzzcocks - Fonda (?)

Yoko is their best release. Everything they did was great though, but Yoko holds extra weight, based on what Paul mentioned there.

And Chris, recognize the schooling on the previous page. It's some good shit.

I always somewhat preferred The Coast Is Never Clear, but Yoko really hit hard tonight.

Freeleech that stuff while the tokens are available.

And for all of you, check out Jeffrey Lee Pierce - Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee and Cypress Grove with Willie Lee. It's the best delta blues album ever done by white guys from LA. The version of Pony Blues just shreds.

Unrelated, but New York Dolls and the Stooges are the best bands to do anything to, basically.

In a way, yes. I've been re-downloading stuff I have at low bitrates and that prompted me to listen to the Dolls for the first time in awhile and they embody everything I love about punk and feel kind of got lost when hardcore and crust and stuff came around. Takes me back to when I was 15 years old and how fresh and exciting all that shit was. As for the Stooges, I maintain that Funhouse is the single best rock & roll album of all time, if you want to talk about the very fucking essence of what rock is and should be. There are albums that are more adventurous, that pushed further, that took the rock song into more unexpected places, but none that caught the pure primal raw power (including that album) anywhere close to as perfectly as Funhouse.

Also, anyone who hasn't heard The Monks - Black Monk Time, please stop wasting your life.

Yes! That first album is perfect. And I totally feel the same about the Stooges.

You turned me on to The Monks record from another thread, such a gem right there as well.

I'll have to give the New York Dolls another go-around, as they never clicked for me. It was the same with MC5 when I was younger though, and now I love them, so it may be time.

    And Funhouse is perfection.

Great, I missed The Sonics conversation. That dude had the most awesome, hilarious scream in all of rock and roll. It makes me want to laugh and destroy something at the same time. 'Strychnine' and 'Psycho' are two of my favorite songs ever.

I tried listening to that Rockin' Bones comp a while back but too many of the songs sounded the same - Rockabilly sound, same structure. Repeat.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

Proposed: someone needs to create a mashup of Killer Mike's "Reagan" and Def Leppard's "Gods of War."

There is a 1970's film called "The Blank Generation" which documents the original CBGB bands made by Ivan Kral who was a guitar player for Iggy Pop. One of the bands, The Shirts, play two songs. The first is Laugh And Walk Away. I'm trying to remember what the second was but can't for the life of me and google isn't being any help. Anyone got an idea?

It doesn't say anything about "Laugh And Walk Away", but it says 'Song Performer ("Doe")' and their discography on Wikipedia says they have a song called "Poe." Not sure if that helped, but I had to see if I could break google's shitstreak.

Definitely relisten to the Dolls. That first record is amazing and was a pretty important part of my musical education, in terms of bridging garage/punk/glam for me.

    I agree with Andrew.

Edit: ignore the gift horse's mouth that is this video - it's the only album version I could find.

I might wait til I can grab the first album on vinyl. I know it's been repressed and I've seen it for cheap before. It'll happen.

"Everyone's going to your house, to shoot up in yr room. Most of them are beautiful, but so obsessed with gloom... I didn't come here looking for no fix! Ima lookin' for a kiss!"

Some of the best lines on that album, yet alone the fucking music.

I was lucky enough to get the Disintegration Loops box set for Christmas, so I've been listening to that this morning. The end of the live recording is two minutes of complete silence from the audience and the performers. It is probably the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Just incredibly, monumentally poignant. It's phenomenal and unexpected when the audience bursts into applause afterwards. That might be my (belated) favorite moment of music released last year.

We listened to some of that at a record club and I was highly impressed with the live perforrmance. Sounded excellent, but we didn't get all the way to the end. I was very jealous that iceyhotshot got the box, as it's gorgeously packaged.
