I listened to some of the songs from this album today. BIGGEST SPIDERLAND RIPOFF EVER! What am I missing?

Codeine are in no way a Slint ripoff band. That's a lazy comparison based on the fact they both play slow, talk-sing, and use dynamics to make their songs interesting. They pioneered a sound and musical style.

To be clear, it is certainly an obvious point of comparison. I just disagree with your perception that they ripped off Slint wholesale or something. They didn't. They just sound similar.

I don't think that similarities are a bad thing either; I like both bands a lot. I just took exception to Chris essentially saying Codeine bit their whole sound off Spiderland when, in actuality, both bands kind of progressed concurrently and were doing their own thing (albeit with similar sonic hallmarks.)

I listened to a few songs from White Birch, and in Codeine's defense it was with shitty headphones from my phone while driving. And my reaction was definitely a kneejerk one, and I'm usually ok with bands sounding like other bands, but this was way more similar than most.

Yes. Also, Frigid Stars came out before Spiderland, so you could say Slint was ripping off Codeine. But really, the fact is there were a bunch of bands in the slowcore/sadcore "genre" at the time all doing similar things. Also see the first couple Low albums. I Could Live In Hope and Long Division are both very similar in style/sound too.

Yeah, but here's the thing: while good, none of those other bands reached the heights of Spiderland. If you argue that point, you are just wrong. Go listen to Good Morning, Captain and realize the error of your ways.

It's interesting, but it demands to be listened to in complete silence with good headphones.

I promise that, if that style of music clicks with you, you're going to have a moment where you realize that Good Morning, Captain may be one of the best songs ever written. From the lyrics to the tone to the intensity of the performance, it just does everything right, and it's even more incredible that, while it's the best song on the album, it doesn't overshadow the other five tracks.

If you really want to be impressed by Spiderland, listen to Tweez, their first album, and then revisit Spiderland. Then try to find a band that made such a step forward from their first album to second.

So a friend of mine posted the video for Joe "I Wanna Know" on facebook and I thought hey I haven't heard that in years, I'll play that. Good stuff. Now I've listened to songs by Jagged Edge, Next, Ginuwine & 112 and they all sound pretty fucking awesome still.

Edit: The 112 song was "Peaches & Cream" haha, that one was actually ridiculous, but still hilariously awesome.
