Looks like I need to listen to Eureka and Halfway to a Threeway next.

Moreso Halfway to a Threeway for that same sound. Eureka is great, but it's more in the American Primitive vein. Really excellent acoustic music. Reminded me of Leo Kottke.

I am blasting a pretty awesome Grooverider mix so I don't have to listen to my roommate and his gf on her last night in town. Yay.

Any album recommendations for driving through Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks? Atmospheric stuff that will complement the scenery?

I've posted two videos on youtube. They're both fairly popular, and I just watched them again for the first time since I recorded each. Check em:

Edit: Both these have as many views as they do because they were posted on Pitchfork.

So this whole post is basically boasting, besides the video. Oh well, modesty is for chicks.

If you enjoy the show Classic Albums or the more straight-forward 33 1/3 books, the recent P4K doc on The Lonesome Crowded West is fairly interesting. A lot of the old footage has been around for a while, but it was cool to hear the band members and producers/engineers talk about the recording process.

THe part I love most is actually the brief horn part at the end of the first song. It's like a gut punch. Definitely my favorite O'Rourke release.

I read an article about potential best albums of all time, and one commentor posted one of the most bizarre lists I've ever seen:

Talk Talk – Colour of Spring
Men at Work – Buisness as Usual
    Santana – Axbraxas
    Beatles – Sgt. Pepper
    Nirvana – Nevermind
    Limp Bizkit – Significant Other
    Steely Dan – Aja
    Stone Roses

I want to meet this person.

lol Men at Work. Great album, but not sure how I feel about that inclusion.

Intriguing list, I too would like to pick this person's brain.

It's just tough because he's put on so many masks over the years. But, I will say he does have a certain fingerprint to his music, you always can tell when he's involved. I've listened to about 27 of his releases with his various bands, collaborators and monikers, and it's rare that you even question that he is involved in some way, shape or form.

In the 'recommend an album by an artist' thread, I mentioned Swans. A few weeks ago, I got The Great Annihilator and I really enjoyed it.

Yesterday I listened to Soundtracks For the Blind for the first time and I was like, WOW. So many of the tracks are creepy, yet beautiful and powerful (several of them remind me of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who I am a fan of).

Today I listened to My Father Will Guide Me A Rope Up From the Sky, I enjoyed it.

So, yeah, I've been on a big Swans kick lately, with still more from them I wanna listen to. Really excited to see these guys in September.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

Do you ever have one of those days where you just say fuck it, I'm gonna listen to a shit ton of albums I never have before? Today was one of those days for me. Some of the bands I was familiar with but just hadn't heard the album, others were bands I had never listened to before.

Dinosaur Jr. - Beyond - This was the only original lineup album that I hadn't yet put on. There are some really fantastic songs on here, but a few that aren't anything special as well. The end of "Pick Me Up" was definitely the highlight. B.

Sparklehorse - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot - First time listening to the band. I had been meaning to forever. This album is fucking incredible. Can't wait to put it on again. A+.

Yo La Tengo - Electr-O-Pura - Maybe it's because this was the first time I've listened to a YLT album with headphones, but this might be the best album I've heard from them. I mean, a band could use "Flying Lesson (Hot Chicken #1)" as a template for an entire career if they wanted to. At least as good as I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One in my book. Ira's a fucking genius. A.

The Drones - Wait Long By the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By - I usually have a hard time with vocals like on this one, but the music was so good it was easy to forgive. Lots of Neil influence for sure. These guys really need to be added to ATP so I can see them with a belly full of whiskey. B+.

Bad Brains - Bad Brains - First time. So good. I really liked how the dub tracks were thrown in there to buffer the mayhem a bit. A.

Jay Reatard - Watch Me Fall - Nice, energetic album. But kind of sing-songy, and nowhere near the adrenaline rush that I love about Blood Visions. B.

Caribou - The Milk of Human Kindness - Very, very solid album, even if it is much less consistent than Up in Flames. "A Final Warning" is amazing. A-.

Spotify is tempting me, mainly due to its integration with your local music and gigantic classical and opera selection... but holy living fuck their player is the least intuitive thing I've ever used. You can't clear the play queue? You can't save anything other than by creating endless playlists?

A series of recent tweets from Ian Cohen of Pitchfork:

For fuck's sake, can more bands sound like Sugar?
I wouldn't have to say that kind of shit if we just told our kids the truth that "Everlong" is better than anything Nirvana ever did.
Also, fifteen copies of "File Under: Easy Listening" are in every used CD store, but "Gift" is nowhere to be found on YouTube. #thefuck
This all seems accurate to me. Discuss.
