Amazing.
So The Flaming Lips to Encase 24-Hour Song in Human Skull
6 hour song kinda sucked, so I can't see this being good at all.
Just read that Gnarls Barkley should have a new album out in 2012. Fuck yeah.

It's more of an ambient/tone generator than an instrument, but you can adjust the rate at which the "planets" orbit which changes the rate at which each tone is played/triggered. A cool concept, and one which might be good if you want something to zone out to or playing in the background while reading. The solar system visualized as a musical instrument, chiming away the years.

So I'm listening to a Flac recording for the first time, and it is also a vinyl rip (which could easily affect my judgement). I'm not sure if it is in my head that Flac sounds a lot better or not, but I am really liking this sound. Does anyone know of any specific records where you can tell a distinct difference from Flac to V0, and records that lack a difference?
Steve Albini is a quote machine. While you're making the record, you're sort of prevented from appreciating it on that level because you can't allow yourself to be distracted by your enthusiasm and ignore problems as they come up. So you're sort of like a gynecologist in a sense. Like you're working up close and personal with a vagina but you really shouldn't allow yourself to get turned on by it, because you've got a job to do. You need to have a different relationship with the vagina. And it's the same way with music when you're in the studio, so it's only after you finish a record that you even can allow yourself to enjoy it as a fan.
Listen to just about any PBTHAL vinyl rip (there's a collage of his rips on ?). My experience is that you will notice the difference with music that has a lot of dynamic range...and is mastered at the appropriate levels (which often means pre-2000 recordings, sadly).

I had no idea this song came out in 1966. Love, love this video.

That'll do it alright.
stupid question. my brain has left me
didn't there used to be a thread where people would just post up mixes whenever they felt like it? not the mix exchange thing (which had its own merits and weaknesses) but just "here's a mix, download it if you want".
So far which band that broke up this year has been the worse for everyone?
At ATP I drunkenly and shyly told Will Oldham how underrated ASOR is and how it deserves more attention and instead of saying thanks and turning back to his own life, he shook my hand and started talking poignantly about how he'd been thinking about it a lot lately because we'd just had the anniversary of September 11th and the three of them were recording that album during the aftermath and I just stood there like I was made of bricks, sputtered out how much I'd liked his set earlier and thanks for it, and then walked away like I'd just embarrassed myself on national television.
I'm never allowed to talk to anybody ever again.
