Default Ask Archie Bunker about gambling or Las Vegas

I have been a professional gambler since 2003.

I know that a number of you are considering visiting Las Vegas before/after Coachella, or perhaps even playing at some of the local Indian casinos.

Feel free to ask me questions related to any form of gambling (table games, slots, sportsbetting, poker), or about Las Vegas in general. This includes both strategy and procedural questions.

You can also ask me about online gambling.

I haven't worked a job in 10 years, and have completely supported myself with gambling, so go ahead and ask away.

I will ignore any trolling posts here, but will answer any reasonable question.

Did your passes come in, or do you have to play some more blackjack to get some passes off of stubhub?

I play a lot of smaller poker tournaments (2-3 tables) and do pretty well, but I have never done well in a larger tournament. Is there some trick or different style of play for larger tournaments?

I play craps the following way:

I start with one bet on the pass line. A point comes, I put odds behind it.
I then place a come bet. It gets moved to a number and I put odds on top of that.
I repeat the come bet until I have odds on 3 numbers at all times. When I get paid, I place another come bet.

What are the plusses minuses with this approach? Should I be placing odds on more or less than three numbers at any time?

Audra, have you read Tournament Poker for Advanced Players by Sklansky? It's a very easy read and IMO a staple for anyone playing touranments of any size.

In Blackjack, there are two schools of thought about whether it's a good idea to hit on 16 or soft 17 when the dealer card is less than 6. What is your opinion on this?

I used to avoid slots like the plague, but the last 3 times I've been to Vegas I have been playing around the Wheel of Fortune machines and am astounded at how often and how much they pay out. I will now not throw at least $20 into one of those on a Vegas trip.

Slots have another good purpose. Once you sign up for a players card (Total Rewards, MLife, Backstage Pass, Grazie, etc...), even after minimal slot play, the casino program will flag you as a potential 'slot player'. You'll then receive for about 12-24 months, some very good promotions to stay in their hotel (usually free, but if not, highly discounted rates), sometimes even being invited to free slot-tournaments. (Of course, you'll also be rated for your table games play as well). Oh, and all Caesars Total Rewards casinos offer pervasive discounts on food throughout the casinos.

Even if you are a minimal gambler, it’s totally worth it to sign up for every rewards card at each casino you play.

You get those rewards for table play as well, as long as you remember to give them the card when you sit down.

I really do need to start getting these players cards and I don't know why i haven't. I go to Vegas about twice a year and even though i don't tend to bet a lot of big money, I do play a lot. I tend to move from casino to casino fairly quickly though, which i guess is why i haven't done this, but I should just get in the habit of collecting them from now on.

Yr a smart man. It's kinda hard to resist a $5 roulette table tho. Stay away from the machines. If you don't have enough money to play table games then don't play. Some of the casinos have war now and I can't believe the amount of cash people lose on such a simple game.

Right. I guess the point I'm trying to make is 1) sign up for everything everywhere, no matter how little you play. And 2) if you only typically play table games, play a little slots, and vice versa. You'll name will show up on multiple promotion lists for the same casino.

I need to do this more often as well. I just hate having all of those cards floating around in my wallet. I got one at the casino here though and only used it once, I got a monthly deal for a free room during the summer on weeknights and $29/night on weekends. It would be a lot nicer to get those options in Vegas so it would be like a real vacation.

If I'm at a poker or slot machine that's been playing cat and mouse with me for 2 hours, what are the odds that when I decide to move on, some idiot who's never gambled will walk up, drop in their coins and end up winning the Big One? I really, really hate standing off in the shadows watching after I've left the machine. It happened to me once, and since then I've been known to cash-out, sit there a moment and wait, and then reinsert money, hoping the machine thinks I'm a new person.

Typing that just now just made me realize how fucking stupid I may appear while gambling....But, is it?
Its like the Infinite Monkey Theorem, if you put X amount of monkeys in a room with a typewriter and ask them to give you Shakespeare 99% of them will fling their shit at you while the other 1% will masturbate in the corner.

Reminds me of the "guess which number I'm thinking" table from "Vegas Vacation".

Free hit, take it. Particularly if the shoe hasn't been busting heavily, but i don't think there's two schools of thought. You always hit soft 16 for sure
