The height really isn't that bad when you're there. Or maybe I just fell in love with the view too much. This is at Sears (now Willis) tower in Chicago btw. I still want to go out on the transparent bridge that goes over the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is where I learned that I feared such heights. They hadn't built the transparent bridge yet. I probably would have fallen off it somehow.

I am more ok with standing on the edge of a massive cliff, and less ok with depending on a piece of man-made glass to support my body and keep my alive. If we wanted to psychoanalyze me, we could probably argue this says something about my fundamental distrust of humanity. But I prefer to think of it as solid logic: shit breaks.

So it makes everyone feel better, they drilled and anchored through cracks in the stone. Construction was halted due to finding these large cracks, but continued after they engineered a way around it.

I still want to go walk out on that thing. It would at least be a cool story if I went out that way.

Standing on the edge of a massive cliff is what struck the fear in me. I was afraid that either me or somebody else would trip and slide off.

This fear of heights does not exist on airplanes. I trust airplanes. Even little ones.

In high school, I was in an orienteering team, and we did a couple big competitions in Arizona. I don't remember where it was... Both times were in the same place... The land was very mountainous, but not with too high an elevation, so it was more like a bunch of big hills, cliffs, and dry ravines. It was desert, with hardly any trees... I think it might have been somewhere between Phoenix and Tucson.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun. We would camp out there. The first time we went, I assumed that it would always be warm or hot, and I didn't bring much in the way of blankets or clothing, and I froze my ass off in the night.

This might be the worst spot in the country. It's a relatively short/easy drive from Tucson to Phoenix but it's probably the ugliest stretch of highway in the States. I haven't done a lot of outdoorsy stuff around PHX, but Tucson has some beautiful locations. I love being able to go from the desert one minute, drive 30 minutes east and be in the forest the next.

Yeah, it wasn't really a beautiful place. The camping area was pretty bare bones, on flat desert that sort of led to the mountainous area, which was the competition site. It probably wasn't a place that a person would want to hike through, but for an orienteering match, it was an excellent challenge. You were always climbing uphill or sliding downhill, it was pretty treacherous, and it was a huge course. In El Paso, my partner and I would KILL! Over there, we couldn't even place. We would actually leave before the award ceremony.

No worries Dale I too have never been! When you live there it just feels like you could go there any time so you might as well do something more interesting.
