No one ever says CA, Amy; it's only written. You hear it in your head as California, not "see ay". The only acceptable way to refer to CA when speaking is California. Cali is unacceptable in any context.

In a perfect world, it would be added to the banned words list. Seeing those four little asterisks (and the confusion/consternation of those who tried to type it) would make me so happy.

When I first moved out here, I always said "San Fran," and got shit from someone who was a transplant. He genuinely seemed offended and told me that it's called "the city."

Coming from Connecticut, every time someone said "New York," it's assumed they meant New York City. If we were talking about other parts of New York, we would specify (e.g. upstate, Albany, Poughkeepsie). But I won't get offended if you all want to say New York City.
