Exactly. This issue transcends the mere 'football is a violent sport issue'. The bounties threaten the NFL's institutional control over their own product. The punishments are not just "you had a bounty system and we think that's bad"; the punishments are "we had specific league rules forbidding bounty systems and you chose to blatantly ignore the rules; you were warned; you kept doing it anyway."

edit: actually that last bit should be "you kept doing it anyway and lied to us about it."

It'll be interesting to see how the Saints players are treated. Nobody really knows what treasure trove of evidence that the NFL has gathered. They're working with the Players' Association to figure out the fines/suspensions. Supposedly, there's 20+ current Saints defenders on the list, which if all were suspended for a few games would make for a humorous set of free agents, undrafted rookies and other street players to start the season.

And it's looking like the situation will either force their hand to give Drew Brees an unreasonable contract, or let him drag them through an ugly trade process. There's zero chance that he'd step on the field with a franchised player contract. When he did that for the Chargers, he got injured and almost had to retire (i.e. losing a ton of money).

So I wouldn't call the Saints lucky.
    *based upon tedious fact checking.

I think the player punishment is a trickier issue. Coaching and management are more accountable to the league for institutional control than are players. The fact that the Saints as an organization set up and ran the bounty system makes them more culpable than the players who just participated in it because their coaches said they should. It doesn't make them guilt-free, but it does mean the punishments should be less severe.

4 players that have been named in the case against the Saints are Remi Ayodele, who was just randomly cut this afternoon by Minnesota, Tracy Porter, who has yet to get an FA contract offer after a really good season, the Saints are seeking LB help to replace Jonathan Vilma and the Browns are doing the same for Scott Fujita... I see something coming together very soon, I think the league is going to come down pretty fucking hard on the players, as they very well should.

Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin does not like the Tebow trade

I was drinking my morning coffee when the headline flashed across the bottom of the screen. That sound you heard was me choking and sputtering.

My Jets have given up two perfectly good draft picks for Tim Tebow, the worst quarterback in the National Football League.

    Gak.

What the hell are they thinking over there at Gang Green central?

Mark Sanchez is not, as yet, Eli Manning, but he is a talented quarterback with a good arm and he completes more than fifty per cent of his passes, none of which can be said for Tebow. The last thing he needs is a stadium full of Timomaniacs screaming for Tebow every time a pass falls incomplete. The divisions in the Jets locker room last season were well documented. THis is just going to make those problems a thousand times worse.

Nor do I think that Tebow's conspicuous piety will play well in the Big Apple. This is the city that once embraced Broadway Joe. Tebow would fit better in... well, if Branson, Missouri had an NFL team, that would be a perfect fit.

WOW... This is proof that the Bears really fucking hate Matt Forte, they refuse to give the dude a long term contract and continue to franchise him for one year deals meanwhile he has accounted for more than half of their lousy offense every season. Teams have been salivating at the thought of him hitting free agency and the bears would rather run him to the ground until he gets hurt (like last season).

I'm a Bears fan, and I will applaud when Forte leaves. They have treated him like shit, and he shouldn't even think about coming back when he has a chance to leave. What a shame to treat a great and loyal player like that.

I hate Jacobs, but he's still an upgrade over happyfeet Dixon. The niners need a short yardage back. I was hoping they would pick one up in the draft like Robert Turbin. Dude is built like a brick shithouse.

NFL owners adopted new rule changes today. Postseason overtime rules will now apply to the regular season, and all turnovers will be automatically reviewed by officials. So if a quarterback throws a clear interception that's returned for a touchdown, will both the interception and the touchdown now have to be reviewed? Looking forward to more commercial breaks.

What does that leave for coaches to challenge anymore? Spot of the ball? Catches? That's about all I can think of. Wouldn't it have been easier just to give each coach an extra challenge or something?

This was a pretty important change. Way too many fumbles have gotten waved off by whistle-happy refs in recent years... this will make them swallow their whistles when the ball is moving around, and the replay can decide.

Besides, no game should be decided because refs blew a couple early calls and the coach has no challenges left. It's always been a completely moronic distinction.

I agree that's why I always thought the only two challenges rule was stupid. Yeah they recently adopted with extra won if you win both. I always thought it should have been as long as you win them you should get to keep them.

Gregg Williams audio. I like hard hits and all, but I really don't think this is necessary

Funny how their defense was claiming total ignorance of it, while having a documentary filmmaker in the room recording it.
