I don't think it's all doom and gloom for the US. Our games go Ghana--Portugal--Germany, so if we can get something out of those first two games I think we can still go through. We probably have the hardest group though, beyond Group B. Mexico and France got fucking lucky, and H looks to be the weakest IMO.

i did a quick run thru and came up with these Quarters:

    Brazil vs. Columbia
    Croatia vs. Italy

    France vs. Germany
    Argentina vs. Belgium

So we could hypothetically have a Brazil/Argentina final? That's fucking awesome.

i don't think Argentina can ever beat Belgium or Germany to get to the Final

I'd agree Germany would be tough for Argentina to get by, but I think people are massively over-rating Belgium. Lots of great talent, sure, but the last major tournament they played in was the WC in 2002 meaning that none of the current squad has any experience with top level international football.

as far as Belgium, people were wondering about them early this year but then they got hot and ran away with their division in Qualifying.. seem completely legit to me

Sweden was a decent club and Portugal destroyed them.. i can't fathom how USA can beat them at all right now

Sweden got beat by a series of lightning-quick counter attacks in the 2nd leg rather than being convincingly beat over both legs, so if the US can stay compact and disciplined defensively I think we can frustrate their attack. If we can beat Ghana and get a draw with Portugal we put ourselves in a good position.

As for Belgium, you're right that they cruised in their group but I'm just not convinced of their ability when the pressure is really on them. Every WC throws up a surprise semi-finalist, though, and I guess their's no reason why it can't be Belgium this year.

see and i thought on a couple games against Costa Rica and Jamaica that the US looked like cement trying to defend the counter attacks..

Yeah I don't think this is as big of a death group people are saying it is. Granted still not an easy time advancing as it is a harder group but wouldn't say death group. Yeah Germany is Germany. I honestly believe we are better then Ghana. Granted the last two world cups have proven wrong but I think we beat them, especially in a non elimination game for us. And Portugal is a scary name but remember they just barely qualified if it wasn't for 5 minute time period from Ronaldo. Otherwise they didn't look all that dominate. Not an easy time to advance but very doable. Or maybe I am just a shameless apologist justifying it somehow in my head.

i think Sweden could have beat Honduras, Jamaica & Panama all at the same time..

this is a bad, bad draw for USA..

My super quick and not at all thought-out mock up came up with Brazil/Uruguay (tasty!), France/Germany, Spain/Ivory Coast, and Argentina/Belgium in the Quarter Finals.

bug, you see Croatia upsetting Spain that early? Bold call, that one! What's your thinking behind it?

With Srna, Mandzukic & Jelavic i see some solid Veteran leadership on this team...
And they are all at the age where this is their LAST chance.. my gut just tells me that they're going to want it more

And Croatia's form has NOT been good in 2013 but they did play Spain close in 2012.
Just one of my gut feeling picks right now.. I also think Costa Rica is better than people think

Ghana wasn't in our group in 2010 but they did knock us out in the first round.

Give Belgium a couple of years and they're going to be super scary. Still should be exciting at this Cup.

the best part for me in all this "oh no, the group of death! we're never gonna do anything in the world cup" reaction i'm seeing is that the world cup won't be played for another SIX MONTHS. a lot can happen during that interval. granted, probably nothing major will happen during that time, but i'm not going to throw my hands up in the air and shake my fists at the soccer gods for forsaking us in the group draw. i'm not going to start fretting until may. even then, jurgen will have had plenty of time to get all his ducks in a row and the team on the same page
