This is so insulting to both Ghana and the U.S.

Maybe Ghana actually made a good attempt against a strong U.S. defense. That's how Klimsmann saw it in his post-game interview. Our offense and mid-feild and our ability to put plays together is what worries me.

Why do I have this feeling that I agree with everyone else, but at the end of the day it's going to be Gunz that says something like "I told you so".

They did not forget how to shoot. Barely missing the goal is not "forgetting how to shoot". Kicking the ball directly at the goalkeeper is just as useless. The goal is getting the ball to a place the goalkeeper can't do anything about it but still inside the bars. Ghana had many shots that Howard could do nothing for; minuscule differences in power of the kick/angle of the foot/etc. that would have resulted in goals.

Good defense would have meant making it so that Ghana was not able to take so many shots that were so close to scoring.

The whole things smells of the particular kind of affectation that afflicts the weak-minded insecure.
Many (English-speaking, since you're talking about English terminology) Americans (aka "those soccer nerds") that watch soccer watch soccer from other countries (such as EPL and other UEFA leagues). English-language broadcasts of these games generally have announcers from the British Isles. That are not necessarily speaking exclusively or even primarily to Americans. There is also - certainly historically - more articles and analysis written by/for a British audience.

Most sports have their own terminology and customs, see points, runs and goals. And sometimes there are important distinctions and the special terminology is an integrated choice where changing one term to line it up with that used in other sports causes confusion.

If you want to wade into such discussions it helps to get the lay of the land, as it were.

"The Kansas City scored 7 points in the second period and Detroit never recovered, result at the final was 4-11"

If someone said that first off I'd have no idea what sport they meant. When I figured out it was baseball I'd figure they little to no exposure to baseball as it is announced, broadcast and discussed in the United States. And as such discussion with them would be difficult.

I think there is a fundamental difference between terms-of-art, specific to the sport, and everyday language used to talk about the sport. Goals are goals, not points, I get that. But "equaliser"? fuck that.

If soccer wants to become a mainstream sport in the US then they should use US words not British. Do soccer fans say "the side arrived at the stadium in their coach followed by a lorry carrying their kit, ready for an afternoon of footie?"

What is the fundamental difference between a goal and a point? I'll answer: nothing. It's just different traditions.

Also "nil" is shorter than "nothing". And "equalizer" is a particularly fun term, more exciting than "tying goal". I hear "team" just as frequently as "side" in soccer and the latter occasionally in other sports. "Fixtures" and "tables" strike me as terms for discussing the EPL and such and it makes sense to just stick to the terms those leagues use rather than seed confusion by trying to Americanize it. And the MLS website does say "Schedule" and "Standings".

Back when the NFL had sudden death overtime did you ever hear anyone talk about a "walk-off touchdown"? No, because "walk-off" is associated with baseball.

ESPN uses "fixtures" and "tables" in its world cup reporting.

Next thing the soccer cult is going to start insisting on calling it football.
