This is why I hate the World Cup -- Americans with a paltry understanding of the sport all of a sudden come out of the woodwork and spout absolutely asinine statements with an absurd amount of self-confidence.

Seriously, fuck off. What have I said that was so totally off base? You're so convinced that I'm an idiot, but you have yet to xplain it. My ideas have been corroborated by other "experts" in this thread, so I think you should just stop being a bitch and accept that I will be here until mid-July. Get over yourself.

    Um, no, they haven't.

Offensively, we really didn't do that much during the game. Our midfield wasn't nearly aggressive enough and was making sloppy errors that gave the ball away (I'm looking at you, Bradley).

We survived, which is great, but we have to play a ton better than that if we want to stand up to Portugal and especially Germany.

So, some of you.. you watch USA unable to string 3 passes together for 90+ minutes against an African team, in a year where the African teams are exceptionally inept, and yet you think the Americans MIGHT have a chance against the likes of Portugal or Germany?

get the fuck out of this thread

We were also very lucky that Ghana could not shoot for shit as more clinical players would have put a lot of those chances away.

but did nothing. Ghana had the ball almost 70% of the time and they were only able to get 8 legit shots on goal. How is that not messy? And that high kick against Dempsey was pretty rough along with plenty of other fouls.

The US only had the ball a quarter of the match. With that they managed 8 chances with 5 shots on goal and 2 in the net. How is that not taking advantage of every chance they got?

The reason they did nothing, though, is more a function of Ghana playing poorly in the final third than the US playing well defensively; smarter and more clinical players would have ended that game by halftime.

You're completely right to say this, as the US made the most of their limited opportunities and doing so is what won them the game. But the overall performance was truly awful and that's what has many of us very concerned. We won, but the scoreline papers over a performance which better teams will take advantage of.

A team that has possession 70% of the game is the antithesis of messy playing. Not capitalizing on scoring opportunities with on shot goals isn't "messy" playing either. A team that has played sloppily continually loses possession of the ball or doesn't even get to the point where they have scoring opportunities. Plenty of Ghana's shots were dangerous -- and it is just lucky that they weren't on target.

Ghana had 21 chances that manifested into only 8 shots on goal, but the US defense played no part in that? OK. Sure.

The US played poorly and I am surprised they won. Ghana's first goal felt inevitable; several times they were a got away from more. The US were not able to build anything and it's lucky they won.

They have a chance against Portugal but the first game did not instill confidence.

Nobody is saying the goals we scored were lucky - the fact that Ghana forgot how to shoot for 90 minutes is what was lucky.

Fabio Coentraeo has been ruled out for the rest of the tourney due to injury. With Pepe's suspension, Portugal is now without 2 of their top defenders (both Real Madrid players). This should definitely help the US's chances Sunday.

Also did anyone here about John Brooks' dream Saturday night that he scored the game winner with a header off a corner kick in the 80th minute? This is a team of fucking destiny people.
