Yeah, that shit wont fly the deeper into the talent pool you go. African nations just dont look the same outside of Africa. Ivory Coast looked good once Drogba came in and Japan were worn out. But they (Afircan Teams) arent looking too stellar.

get the fuck out of this thread
I genuinely think they could have a chance against Portugal. Germany, no, but Portugal didn't look that amazing against Germany (granted Germany can make anybody look bad). If they keep them away from the goal (again, granted Ghana made a lot of messy mistakes which Portugal is capable of doing too), anything is possible.

It doesn't matter if you get outplayed if you win.

Yea the midfield was having a hell of a time sustaining any pressure against Ghana. I felt like I was watching an SJ Earthquakes game. However I do think the midfield will play better against Portugal.

Jozy getting hurt threw a huge wrench in our game plan. While he was still on the pitch we actually were getting balls through. The way he went down affected the psyche and as an effect the play of our entire team. We brought in Johansson (Klinsmanns only substitution hiccup) who was a total nonfactor. We were basically playing 11 v. 10 the rest of the way. Michael Bradley had his worst ever game for the USMNT and he will play better against Portugal (he really can't play any worse). Also Clint Dempsey literally couldn't breathe and was choking on blood during the course of the game after he got his nose broken. The team doctors will fix him up before Portugal. This victory against Ghana actually becomes even more impressive when you think about the adversity they had to overcome. And that kind of confidence boost will be huge in the days leading up to the Portugal match.

I say we can get a good result (tie or win) against Portugal because they are simply a one man team, whose one man is capable of single-handedly destroying us. Thats why whatever conversations Klinsmann has this week with Joachim Low are going to be so important. Low will tell his good friend how to bottle Ronaldo up (actually containing him is another story). If we can neutralize Ronaldo there is really no reason the US can't win that game.

From a strategic standpoint I would put Dempsey in Jozy's role then start Diskerud in Dempsey's place.

No Jozy, who the fuck cares, they could start the Green Giant and it ain't gonna fucking matter.

those Ghana goofballs outshot USA something like 20 -7 .. (not even gonna bother looking up the actual #)... and about half of those Ghana shots were wide open and they just powered it over the bar...

the Portugal/German forwards compared to Ghana? How comparable do you think they are?

the only chance i see USA even mustering a draw is if Portugal has a France-2010 meltdown in them somehow

Anyone feel like this ref is awful? horrible calls only against Belgium. That being said, Belgians need to open op with passing and look for easy passes rather than forcing down the middle (where everyone in Algeria is standing).

How easily you forget World Cup 2002 when a heavily outmatched USA squad went up 3-0 on Portugal's Golden Generation team and held on for a 3-2 win. While I think a win vs. Portugal would be nice I would still be absolutely ecstatic with a tie. Couple that result with a German win over Ghana and the USA has their tickets booked to the knockout stage.

The US were very luck to get anything out of that game yesterday. Bug is right - you simply cannot win at international competitions like this when you can't possess the ball for more than 20 seconds at a time, and that will be a big worry for Jurgen as we prepare for the next two matches. Losing Jozy was part of the problem as he's an outlet who can hold the ball while the midfield comes to support him (IMO Jozy's done for the tournament, as when players pull up like he did it normally means a tear - Besler's reaction is that of a strain), and Bradley having an absolute shocker was also a big reason almost every attack broke down. The two enforced subs also meant we couldn't bring on the player who we really needed to (Mixx) to correct that problem, meaning we just had to hold on for dear like and hope to God that another player didn't pull up with cramp/a pulled hamstring.

We were also very lucky that Ghana could not shoot for shit as more clinical players would have put a lot of those chances away. Despite Portugal's struggles v Germany we'll be in for quite a long game if we play similarly against them. I have a feeling Wondo will start the next game as he can best replicate Jozy's role in the squad, and I think Zusi will come in for Bedoya who looked absolutely wrecked by the end of the game.

Belgium got a big wake-up call today as that first 45 minutes was a really poor showing from them. Wilmots made the difference with his substitutions, and I'm sure the team will grow into the occasion as the tournament goes on, but they still seem too naive at this level to make a major impact.

Can someone explain to me why in the US we -- or rather those soccer nerds -- have adopted British words when perfectly good American ones would do?

    Instead of a game being one-nothing, it's "one-nil".
Instead of a tying goal, it's an "equaliser". With an s, mind you.
    Instead of a team, it's a "side".
Instead of a schedule, it's "fixtures".
Instead of league standings, it's "tables".

The whole things smells of the particular kind of affectation that afflicts the weak-minded insecure.

I kept yelling at the TV "SUB BRADLEY OUT", he didn't do anything all game except let the ball slip past on what could have been decent counter-attacks.

I don't think of them as British terms. They are soccer speak.

Although, drub is definitely a Brit word.

Cara apparently did not speak to you harshly enough.

    1. These are brit words that soccer nerds have turned into soccer speak. This is my point, you dolt.

    2. Drub is a commonly used American term. (see, e.g., http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/couri....html?mode=jqm , for an example of the word being used in the headline of an article on a high school baseball game in Texas ... doesn't get any more American than that, you dolt).

Luckily I am Biritsh, so I grew up with these terms and I feel I can get away with using them. But besides the vocab used here, what a fucking game for Mexico. Definitely deserved a goal and looked good. Now I dont know if it was just Brazil looking "meh" or Mexico brought their A+ game. Happy with result

Apparently, drub derives from an Arabic term, so as far as it being used as a sports term it probably started with cricket and with the British.
