Thread: Northern California or Southern California?

Default Northern California or Southern California?

    Hello,

My name is Emily & I'm 23. I live in WI, but plan on moving to CA in the Summer. I was born in Santa Clara, but moved to WI when I was 6. I absolutely love CA & don't consider myself a Wisconsinite. I still visit at least once a year & hate going back to WI. Now that I'm in my early 20s & single, I think it would be the perfect time to jump at that opportunity!

I am a preschool teacher with an AA degree in Early Childhood, so I would like to stay in that profession & maybe do modeling/voice lessons/music blogging on the side.

I have spent months looking at pros & cons of both NorCal & SoCal & I can't choose between them. I like NorCal because it reminds me of home. I have more family there & I love the change in seasons & the laid-back feel. However, I like SoCal because the beaches are perfect, the weather is warmer, & it seems like there is more to do, like Coachellaaa and other festivals

For NorCal, I was looking at the SF Bay area... San Jose, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Mountain View, & Campbell
For SoCal, I was looking at the LA area... Sherman Oaks, Santa Clarita, San Fernando, & Long Beach.
I chose those cities because of the schools that I found, but I still don't know what to do.

Also, I have a few potential roommates lined up in the SF Bay area & the LA area. However, I'm wondering if I should just live with my gma in San Jose for a few months so I can get used to living out there.

By the way, my budget is $500-$800 for rent per person.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Emily

Move to San Jose and the decide. Youll be in the state at least. But Southern is the wiser choice in the end.

What do preschool teachers with AA degrees make? $30k/year tops? Sounds like Palmdale, CA is a wise choice. Victorville may be a #2.

Chill with grandma for a bit and then go where you can get a job. You'll probably get better pay up north.

Going with your grandma in SJ for a bit to feel out the bay area is probably your best option, one that few people have the luxury of before committing.

As far as advice here it's going to be worthless. SoCal loves SoCal, NorCal loves NorCal. blah blah blah.

That said I would imagine being so young you'll probably have an easier time near LA these days. SF's very expensive right now and Oakland isn't far behind (I wouldn't put much odds on you wanting to stay near SJ). It's possible to find a room for $800 in SF but no less than that. Someone in LA can say what the equivalent is down there.

But again, advice here is going to be worthless.

San Jose is awesome. Best climate around, great music within easy reach (SJ Arena, mt winery, Santa Cruz, Oakland and SF all fairly nearby), sports (just opened new 49ers stadium, opening new Quakes stadium next years, Sharks, etc.), great restaurants (especially once you include broader Los Gatos, Saratoga, Sunnyvale, etc), spectacular coast 40 minutes away, Santa Cruz mountains are a few minutes away (ideal for endless mt biking and motorcycle riding), all sorts of wineries nearby, and for a city our size, freeways are just not that bad if you know your way around. I like the southern CA too, mostly the beach areas, but I'm not a hater, except when it comes to sports, of course. Cheaper local areas exist, some are pretty bad, but south of SJ, Morgan Hill & Gilroy, housing is a little more affordable. San Jose downtown has improved loads and while the music scene is weak, the civic auditorium is a cool venue which has started adding some good shows...overall, SJ is pretty damn sweet. Like any city with a one million pop., we have our problems, gang bullshit and so on, but overall, a pretty safe place too.

    um, Habit Burger?

okay, maybe not Sunnyvale. Palo Alto, Cupertino, Los Altos and Mt View, all have their good spots though, as does Willow Glen.

Hah. Fun fact: Habit Burger is a chain originally started in Santa Barbara. It was actually really weird seeing one pop up in Sunnyvale 2 years ago.

I'd move in with your Grandma and actually get hired before making any decisions about randomly moving somewhere.

I was just there last night, and the one on State Street in Santa Barbara during Fiesta. I lived in SB for four years and never heard
of the place until a couple of months ago when I randomly stopped in at the one in Sunnyvale. Now I clearly have a problem and need help. Thanks a lot Habit Burger for making such a ridiculously delicious burger.

5 years moving around in Sunnyvale/Santa Clara/Cupertino/SJ nearly destroyed my soul.

Well, I decided to move to Santa Clarita
What are your thoughts about Santa Clarita area?
I like it because it's safer than a lot of cities in LA County. It is close to LA, but still far enough away so I can get a break from the city life. I also like that it's close to the beach.
I don't like that it stays hot all year.

If there are any other cities that you like, let me know Be nice.

If you like sanitized suburbia, you've found the right place. Oh, and it's really no where close to the beach.

Santa Clarita is not near beaches and being inland, it gets very hot there specifically. It is basically a desert there. It is full of mostly planned communities and/or ranches. What map are you looking at?

Yes, Habit Burger is more prevalent than Five Guys in Southern California. There has been one in Burbank for more than 6 years at this point. Which means that 90 year old white people eat it every day. And also babies.
