Default The Too Many Festivals Thread

If it wasn't already official, there are officially too many festivals... these two put it over the edge for me...

ELVIS COSTELLO, BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE, THE ROOTS AMONG ARTISTS TAPPED FOR
INAUGURAL WHISTLER MUSIC FESTIVAL JULY 19 and 20, 2008

    Elvis Costello
Elvis Costello and The Imposters, The Roots, and Canada's own Broken Social Scene are among the artists that have been tapped for the inaugural Whistler Music Festival, set to take place July 19 and 20 in Whistler, BC. The lineup reflects the eclectic taste of Whistler and Vancouver area residents and the caliber of entertainment expected by visitors to the world-class resort. Other artists secured for the two-day festival include Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Medeski Martin & Wood, Bedouin Soundclash and Serena Ryder. An additional marquee artist will be announced in the coming weeks.

    Wilco
Festival Network, LLC is proud to announce the inaugural Jackson Hole Music Festival on August 16 & 17 in Jackson Hole, WY. Yeah. Having a lot of options to choose from fucking sucks.

I agree with the spirit of this thread, though. There does seem to be a saturation of festivals. I'm only doing 1 this year (Bonnaroo). That's down from 3 (Coachella, Street Scene and Vegoose) from last year.

Hmm, that's an interesting thing to think about...

    Bonnaroo, Lolla, Treasure Island

    this year:
    Lolla, Outside Lands, Treasure Island

Not sure if BFD and Download count, but i am going to them too

Pemberton shouldve nabbed all those bands and then it would really be going head to head with Lolla.

Well, I guess the artists are going to have to make a concerted effort to hit these festivals with the industry evolving. No longer can they rely solely on their own drawing power and thus there will be a 1,000 different festivals.

The worse victim in this, is and will always be our wallets.

I like the idea of lots of festivals... tons to choose from, different lineups, diff vacations, sounds awesome... money is always an issue... but its nice that there are diff options so you dont always have to rely on 1 lineup to be your fun time of the year.

if there were less festivals though, ones like Outside Lands or APW might have better line ups.

Agreed. Too many festivals and they are too similar but just different enough that each has someone you may want to see that another or the rest don't.

Many of us on here are somewhat shileded by this by liking smaller bands that still tour clubs as usual but if you've paid any attention to the live music scene the last few years...it's dying. They can't sell out the next american idol or whoever and tours are cancelling. SXSW, ACL, Lollapalooza, Coachella have had their biggest years while the non-festival live community has been crumbling. Everyone is jumping on that bandwagon. Rather annoying; choice is good but each one is watered down by the next. I hope the trend dies before they kill the festival.

I think it's pretty cool that there are a bunch of festivals, as long as they are in diverse locations, multiple festivals in the same area doesn't make a lot sense

Not everyone can travel the country going to festival after festival, and it's good for music fans that live in places without a vibrant music scene, so they are still able to see good bands

the real travesty that hasn't been mentioned yet is that is going to push bands with major draws like Radiohead to just play a festival dates in a city and treat that as their show. Like SF doesn't get a real Radiohead show because they are playing Outside Lands, but socal gets 4.

yea, that part really does suck, if you have to go to a festival just to see your favorite band in your city.

For smaller bands, I'd rather see them in the clubs. For larger bands, I'd rather see them at festivals. Tickets for huge venues are already really high, and if you can't afford good seats, you end up sitting half a mile away, which is pretty much the least exciting way to experience live music. With a festival, you can wait it out at the main stage to get a good spot and can actually dance or get into it or whatever. I'd never have gotten as close as I did for Portishead or Prince or enjoyed it as much had I seen them in a non-festival setting. But I'll agree, this is getting a bit out of hand. There's even more than I realized: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/articl...festivals-2008

For someone that has to travel out of town to see good shows, I'm more than down with the festival settings. Like was said earlier, as long as they keep the lineups diverse they will definitely serve me an important service.

You don't call Outside Lands a real Radiohead show? I think it will be one of their best shows of the year. Plus for $85 you can get right up front which is way cheaper than you would have to pay for really close seats at a venue, and you don't have seats which really kill the vibe, not to mention you get to see Beck and a bunch of other great bands throughout the day.

Come on man, the first band to ever play at Golden Gate Park at night is Radiohead and you're saying it's not a real show. Fuck that!

The glut of festivals this year in a poor economy will no doubt have it's share of casualties come 2009. But that has just as much to do with the over abundance of the same ole festival thing, as much as the economy in general.

I disagree to a point - Sure it's a real show, but I much prefer Radiohead outside of a festival show having seen them 11 times over the last decade, their tour shows always seem better for some odd reason, I think it's because many more RH diehards show up to the tour than some Jack Johnson fan wanting to see what this Radiohead guy is all about.
