Albums you hated and now love...

The 2008 album thread got me thinking about this. Have you ever made the stupid decision to buy an album based on a single alone, or maybe you were expecting something and the artist delivered a product altogether different?

Did you then go on to end up loving that album?


I can easily say Dirty Vegas' first album fits this perfectly. Mitsubishi commercial > Me assuming they produce catchy house tunes = WTF?!

I HATED that album, save for maybe the first two tracks and the single 'Days Go By'. Its now one of my all-time favorite recordings. Its really great dance-pop music. I'm actually listening to right now.

Anyone else?

Three or four years later, I love it.

2nded, and at the time I was a huge Mos Def fan. It didn't take me 3 or 4 years, but it did take me a while to get into it. And damn, its a great album.

Hail To The Thief is absolutely the perfect example of that, and There There is a freaking monster of a song.

Smashing Pumpkins' Adore is one of those albums for me, I expected every song to sound like Ava Adore, and I didn't quite get it for a long time. Definite slow-burner though, like Hail To The Thief, I think that album held up far better than some of their others, the ones everybody remembers loving.

Neon Bible didn't impress me too much at first, I think listening to it a few times on headphones rather than speakers made the difference. The click for that one was nearly audible - I was on a bus, half asleep, and My Body Is A Cage came on the shuffle. It was one of those "Holy shit." moments, where you wanted to run around grabbing people by the shoulders and yelling at them that they should be fucking listening to this.

LCD Soundsystem's Sounds of Silver, I fucking hated it for months and months and months, to the point that I started wondering if other people were hearing a different damn album to the one I had. I finally got it when I started hearing the songs in the background at parties and stuff.

Everybody keeps telling me I'm going to love Boxer, by The National, if I just keep listening to it, but man, I'm sick of it now, and it's just not happening. It's nice, it's lovely, it is not as freaking earth-shattering as I keep getting told it is. I think I discovered how to love Wolf Parade's Apologies To The Queen Mary about five minutes ago though.

Captain Beefheart took a long time to absorb. Someone sent me 'Ella Guru' when I was in my early teen years and loved it, thinking it was kind of an interesting novelty track, so I bought 'Trout Mask Replica' and had no idea what was going on. I didn't expect his voice to sound like that on ALL the tracks. I still don't know if I LOVE that album or anything, but I've come to terms with it. And I think I prefer 'Safe As Milk' and 'Lick My Decals Off'.

And for some reason, it took me years to love Talking Heads.

That's pretty much been my relationship with Captain Beefheart, too. I find Trout Mask Replica works best if you approach it the same way you might Naked Lunch by William Burroughs. It's more like a piece of art or a long free-form poem than an easily digestible volume. Safe as Milk is the album I probably listen to the most often, but Trout Mask Replica is the one that continues to both flummox and enthrall me. It can just be so exhausting.

The Strokes- Room On Fire, I remember when it first came out I did'nt like it, mainly because I thought it was a step down from Is This It?, but the more I listened the more I loved it. Room on Fire is my fav strokes album now, YES even more than Is This It?
I also like A Weekend in the city now, specially since FLUX came out.

Yeah, it took FLUX to sell me on that one too. I liked Silent Alarm from the start, although I got kind of bored of it eventually. Weekend In The City is winning me round now though, definitely. I mean, I don't think it was the best album of the last year or anything, but I do think it's underrated, just because people wanted Silent Alarm all over again...

I mean, as in choosing to play stuff off of OKC more often then I do. I usually head straight for The Bends or Kid A.

Also I like Amnesiac the least out of the non-Pablo Honey RH records, and I kinda gave up on it after 2 spins. I just haven't been bothered to pick it up again, hence the "I wish I liked it more".

Radiohead is probably my favorite band, but I don't really like In Rainbows. I don't wish I liked it more though, I wish they made a better record!

I know I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but Amnesiac is my least fav. Radiohead album. I've been meaning to give it another listen, just haven't gotten around to it(well with the exception of You and whose army?, Pyramid Song, I might be wrong, and like spinning plates) which I listen to plenty.

I somewhat agree with that...I didn't hate it but I didn't like it very much. There are so many good songs on that album though...There There, The Gloaming, 2+2=5, A Punch Up At A Wedding, Where I End and You Begin...just to name a few.
