The Clash all the way. One of few punk bands I can actually respect.
Uh guys, the Police weren't a stupid, middling Sting solo project, and they were much more than "Every Breath You Take." They didn't make an album as good as London Calling is, but they made five classic albums in six years, went from playing CBGB to Shea Stadium in the same amount of time, and had the good sense to peace the fuck out while still on top.
While I am a fan of both, The Clash IS the only band that matters.
I was into The Clash when I was in high school but as an adult love and appreciate them more then I ever had any idea younger in life...
it's good to see the Police still getting some respect here... few artists have recorded albums as classic as "London Calling," but the Police certainly had the bigger hits during their career... while i got into the Police first, i definitely got into the Clash more...

Police deserve respect, but they do not deserve to win this poll.
His vocal style just sounds very tongue-in-cheek to me. I know, I know, blasphemy.
I just have a hard time figuring out how you go from a very politically charged song like London Calling to Should I Stay or Should I Go. It's like going from Zach de la Rocha to Weird Al Yankovic.

The Police reminds me of this one night I spent with a guy and we listened to the whole discography while dirty things were happening.
I voted for them.

I don't think TallGuy realizes anything about music that isn't spoonfed to him.
His vocal style was meant to sound tongue-in-cheek. You aren't hearing it wrong. The way Joe sang was an integral part to the way their message was delivered. It was a very sly and mischevious "Fuck you" to the British government and the current social/political issues in the UK. He was a lower class brat and he was singing in the voice and position of a lower class brat.
For example, in "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" he sings the line "If Adolf Hitler, flew in today... they'd send a limousine anyway." He got in a TON of shit for this line. And it wasn't only for the words, it was for the way he sang it. It was sarcastic and patronizing. It was with sang in a way that he didn't give a fuck if he got in trouble for singing. It was perfect.
Also, before Joe Strummer formed The Clash, he was a guitarist in a 50's rock revival group. Then he saw The Sex Pistols... and quit his band the very next day. He formed The Clash because he saw the social and political power music could have... but at the same time, he still loved the spirit of good old rock n' roll. That is why The Clash have songs like "Should I Stay or Should I Go."
No, that's not at all what happened. He didn't form anything. The rest of the band (Mick Jones particularily) was searching for a frontman. They eventually found Joe Strummer and asked him if he wanted to be their frontman, he accepted.
Anyway, this is Tall Guy. You're wasting your time.
here watch this.
