Coachella 2008, Day 1 Pictures

i have to admit being a bit overwhelmed with the editing of the mass amount of pictures taken, but i'll slug through it.

Anyway, this year (like all of them) was great for moment capturing. Some of you may have concluded i was Dani's picture bitch this year. A lot of my time was spent outside the Polo Fields, driving around with the Friend who is Psychic getting pictures of Carpoolachella winners (she'll be posting those...that was actually pretty fun..people get so excited). Being outside the grounds for the extended period of time gave me a chance to get the entering process from a new point of view. When the chance arose to run into a tent while waiting on stuff, i took it.

Band wise my Day 1 had a little or a lot of DJ Mehdi, Midnight Juggernauts, Adam Freeland, Cut Copy, Vampire Weekend, dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip, The Raconteurs, The Swell Season, Datarock, The Verve, Jack Johnson, The Black Lips and Fatboy Slim. i took a lot of shitty pictures, but got a few decent ones. i have posted enough on buzznet now to begin PART 1:

i enjoy working at concerts (concert/event planning was one of my jobs in college, worked at jack johnson, nine inch nails, ben harper, flogging molly, nelly furtado [god shes cute], george carlin, dave chappelle, tons more) and spending an afternoon with dani surprising people with passes and more sounds fucking fantastic...

you have the access, and you use your camera well, you do a good job of really communicating the feeling of the event...

also that hot girl in the red tights, this one:



that is a fantastic picture of her butt...

but i was amused because she was all over the stage taking pictures of them, if she wasn't freinds with them security would have told her to gtfo, she was in the way of EVERYONE, the photogs, the sound guy, the audience...lawl...

also in the picture tessa took of you whilst stalking you, i hold my camera the same way, away from my eyes (the advantage of a large viewfinder) so I don't get overly focused on what is in the lens, and don't miss anything interesting...

you are good mr ivankay, and your pictures are appreciated!

even when you are affiliated with a newspaper/magazine, you have to KEEP bothering them, hustling for jobs as a photographer, even if you are doing it for fun to build your portfolio involves, well, hustling

promise them pics, promise them publicity (and pull through, no empty promises) and keep at it...they get thousands of requests for photo passes, and the default answer is always no...

mention that you have already bought tickets, and that your work will be published!! (if its not going to be published, why bother?)

also mention how many other shows you have worked at...and how long you have been doing it...most people who request the passes are amateurs, and amateurs are the last people they want running around with cameras that close to the talent...

I agree with this all the way. Most of the other music blogs and photo sites dont catch what you do. You are there as a fan first which makes your photos stand out you post what the fans want to see. You capture more than just a couple of good shots of the bands you capture the emotion....even if you are not trying.

Passive was backstage during Vampire Weekend. He got plucked out of the crowd by some photographer for some Coachella pictures. Wonder why?

One of the positives to having my cameras stolen last October was getting the replacements. The sound recording on my old Canon S70 was very awful if you were anywhere near close. The sound recording on the new camera (Canon G9) is turning out to be pretty bonus. Have to admit i wasn't expecting that when i bought it.
