    Default Portishead's setlist...

    Was O.K.
The new stuff is not really their thing.

And what was up with not doing "Strangers" or "It's A Fire"?
Massive letdown though an amazing performance.

"machinegun" was sick, "glorybox" was also great, and of course "nobody loves me", Portishead was my second favorite performance besides Roger Waters

They were better than I hoped they would be. Stoked to see them again next month.

I thought the show was so surprisingly good on account of just how incredible the new material is. They're clearly excited about it... this was not the nostalgic reunion show I expected.

Shit I forgot it's called "sour times", oh well, their new stuff was better than the two old songs, "sour times" and "glorybox"

"machinegun" stands out in my head, even when they did soundcheck on saturday morning in the campgrounds

Eh? The new stuff is ace! Though I admit, it needs repeated listens. When I first heard it, I wasn't that into it, but now I play THIRD constantly.

And I read somewhere that they had to cut out 5 songs from their set to make room for Prince.
I'm sure HUNTER was one of the cuts. I would have loved ITS A FIRE or WESTERN EYES (indio, CA huh-huh), but ROADS was the one that stood out for me.

GLORY BOX is kinda epic in its own right, but ROADS is one of my favorite songs ever!

Hrm...I kinda wish every song from their 3 albums was on the set list ....thats how I feel about their music. Never a dull moment (at least IMO)

By the way, "Over", "All Mine" and "Mysterons" were three of the five highlights for me of that day.

They did not play "All Mine," dude. And the new stuff is awesome, especially the songs they played live.

MarkO, where are you seeing them soon? Europe?

"Roads" and "Glory Box" were the highlights for me out of their old stuff. "Machinegun" was absolutely unreal - haunting, beautiful, and bit terrifying (maybe it was the drugs) all at the same time. And whatever song they closed with was unbelievable. There were barely any vocals, I think Beth was down in the pit shaking hands and thanking the crowd for most of it, but it was some of the most intense progressive metal I've ever heard. Combined with their massive video screens, it really reminded me of TOOL. Never thought Portishead would conjur that comparison for me.

Didn't they end with "We Carry On?"

I'm going to declare that Portishead was the best performance I've seen of anyone EVER. There. I've said it. Every single aspect of it was divinely perfect. Even Kraftwerk going into it was wonderful, and I'm not too familiar with them.

Don't know what it was called, picking up Third today on my way home from work. Can't wait to throw it on, close my eyes, and revisit that awesome moment in the desert.

Kinda sad they didn't do Nylon Smile, but Wandering Star coming out of left field made up for it.

I agree, and to think back in January i had no clue who Portishead were. Thanks to all the people on the board who talked about them with such passion that you made me give them another chance after i had wrote them off as being to slow for me. Best show i have ever seen.

I have loved Portishead since high school(99-00 when I was a freshman) and had been waiting to see them live. I thought I had hyped up this performance too much for myself, and that I might be let down a bit because of my own hype. The thing is it was EVEN better than I could had ever thought it was going to be. The emotion, and the way the music was done, broke me down to the point I started to cry, and I felt that Beth was singing to me, and letting me in on her emotions, and I just lost it, my mind was blown right from the start. It was so beautiful.

Watching some youtubes now to make sure I saw/heard what I saw last Saturday since I was flying on acid. other than Beth being slightly sharp at times, it's still dead on. She tends to sing sharp anyways.

Their set was intoxicating. I was entranced from the very beginning. I loved the set list from start to finish. Best performance in 2008, definitely one of the best ever at Coachella.

Also, fuck, I would have loved "Strangers" or "All Mine", but don't fucking complain, Memorial, it was a tremendous set. You really couldn't have feasibly asked for more...
