Indeed. It's a 360 degree lens. The camera is basically taking a picture of the conical "mirror" mounted above the lens, which is then transformed back into the 360-degree picture on the computer

Shhhh, it showed up as a related thread with almost the same title as the legendary sticky "What is it called?" So I had to check it out. Then I noticed a gigantic flaw in some basic Back to the Future lore.
