Default Most "punk" act playing Coachella?

I can't even pretend to be familiar with all the acts... But I'm gonna say Peaches followed closely by RATM and Willie Nelson. Of course, I'm using the broadest possible definition of "punk," and using it more as an adjective than as a reference to the musical genre... (There's another thread about that...)

Oh. Because the most musically "punk" band is Against Me! I guess it's Folk-Punk. If that makes any sense at all.

Isn't Circa Survive a punk band? One of those new punk bands with the emoesqueness to it?

Well you can't expect to find much punk at Coachella. It mainly brings in popular rock acts and 80s reunions on the main stage, almost popular rock acts on the mojave, a bunch of random stuff that usually isnt punk on the Outdoor theater, electronica and dance in the Sahara, and experimental or lesser known stuff in the Gobi.

Be Your Own Pet played last year in the Mojave. I hated them.

Yeah, I have low expectations for punk music at Coachella, but I can deal with it... Not into the whole emo-pop-punk thing... I'm just hoping one year they can pull off some amazing punk reunion (Dead Kennedys... please?)

I missed BYOP, but I love the record. Why'd they suck?

Well, since the Dead Kennedys have (technically) reunited, I'll assume you mean the Dead Kennedys with Jello Biafra on the mic. That will never happen. Unfortunately.

It may have been that the band I saw before them rocked, and that all the bands following them rocked even more, and exponentially kept rocking more. That, and I didn't even know who they hell they were. And the girl was saying a lot of stuff that was not funny. And at first I thought she was the daughter of somebody from The Dears, and she was helping put up their stuff.

Yeah, I've seen the "new" DK's, and they're pretty damned good, I have lot's of fun at the shows... But yeah, I did mean with Jello, and yeah, I know it will never happen. *Tear*

PsyGuy...from reading your posts...I'd have to agree with you based on your definition of punk...which I'd agree with. The idea of punk has nothing to do with the way the music is played. Hell except for a few acts, almost everyone playing goes against the mainstream, which is what I feel like the original idea of punk was.

Hell yes. The Velvet Underground and the Stooges came at a time when everyone was flaunting "flower-power" and "peace and love..." They broke open the possibilities for the "OG" punk bands, and the whole idea was to go against the mainstream. Most of the bands couldn't even play their instruments at first.

I wouldn't really consider circa survive to "punk" in the sense that Rancid is punk. Circa survive usually is clumped into the new wave emo scene because their lead singer was/is? the lead singer in Saosin (another band heavily associated with the new wave emo scene). I personally enjoy Circa Survive. and think they are better than any emo band that they are usually associated with. Barring any major conflicts I will probably watch them.

OK... Now who is the LEAST punk act playing Coachella? I say... Lily Allen, Rufus Wainwright (who I love, but just isn't punk), and Benny Benassi.

I'll agree about Tiesto... But RHCP aren't the LEAST punk... They're more funk than punk though... Although I'm only kinda so-so about seeing them, I don't understand why they're so hated-on. They've made some damn good music over the years, and I think they'll put on a decent show. Couldn't be any worse than having COLDPLAY headline as in 2005... (Talk about least punk act ever...) Just sayin'...

I would say Rufus Wainwright is probably the most punk act playing. Or maybe Peaches. Or SY, but only if they don't play any actual "songs".

    Or Roky.

A history lesson is obviously in order here.

rufus is an outsider completely doing his own thing and he doesn't care one bit if you like him or not. it's subversive and it's creepy and it's sublime. his very presence at a festival where rage against the machine also happens to be playing is in itself an act of agitation. bomb the system, rufus. you go boy.

Girl Talk plays to the ethos of punk; he plays for the crowd, tries to include the audience as much as possible, and he is making a subversive style of music that grates against the popular mainstream.

    I love those posts (#21-#23.)

Now I see how Rufus has got the "punk" vibe. He's a Baroque Punk.

GIRL TALK is one of my must-see artists, and his shows are insane, so yeah, definitely very punk. He's a Guerilla Artist Punk.

And Sonic Youth represent a more traditional punk ethos, if not entirely in their music than in their dedication. They are old-school punks.

    Awesome.
