yeah, put a lock on a fabric tent, because no one will just rip it open if they really want to get inside.

Locks were probably a good idea last year due to the Rage fans. This year you should be ok if you carry important stuff around on your persons.

A lock is just begging someone to rip your tent up.

I was going to try to lock up my tent in 07, but I had this thing that had a combonation, not a key--so I figured I'd forget the combo and be screwed and just didn't lock it. Never had any problems with stuff missing--but I'm always losing stuff.

I locked my tent until the last day when I moved all the money to my car and was sold out.

I had an EZ-Up with sheets tied to it for "walls." I brought nothing valuable other than my tickets, money and camera, which were on me the entire time (minus the slip n slide)

I used a lock when I needed to. I had some cool ass neighbors so I didn't need to use it much. As long as you got a cool group then you're good cause they got an eye on your shit. But you should definitely have one ready to use for when everyone is in the concert and there's no one to watch stuff. IMO. Does anyone use a bear-trap?

I'd say putting a lock on your tent door kind of identifies your tent as a target for any burglars.

In general I've got a fair bit of faith in the coachella vibe... but say someone did want to steal shit from people's tents, I think it's fair to say that most people at coachella either lock all their "valuables" in their car in the parking lot, or take them with them into the festival, just leaving their toiletries/sleeping bag/ some clothers in their tent. These people tend not to lock their tent because there's nothing anyone would want to steal inside anyways.

The tents with a lock on them are much more likely to have someone's stashed ipod or money or something inside. So I'd say a burglar is likely to wander the campground until they see a lock, then whip out a knife or even just a razorblade (security isn't perfect) and slice their way in.

So your saying that if I lock my tent and somebody with no intentions of getting into my tent and stealing my stuff will walk by, see the lock and just all of a sudden be like "oh this safe fuck is gonna pay for locking his tent!" or if it identifies my tent then the potential burglars they are gonna walk past all the unlocked open tents and go for the locked ones. Not hardly...

I thought it was safe to leave some camping chairs out last year, but I totally had one stolen along with my ex's hat. I'm guessing as long as its in the tent you should be good. Make friends or keep it in the car.

Festivals overseas, particularly those in the UK where theft is a much bigger problem, all say DO NOT put a lock on your tent. It's a dead giveaway to would-be thieves that you've got something worth protecting. And unless you've got some crazy knife-proof tent, if they want in, they'll get in anyway.

Thieves are looking for a quick score. Take as much stuff out of your bag as possible and give the space a sort of chaotic, messy look. The last thing they want to do is spend a bunch of time rummaging around, increasing their odds of being caught.

And yes, make friends with your neighbors.

*But theft has never been much of an issue at Coachella so I wouldn't worry about it too much

About 500 people found the answer to this question the hard way three years ago at Bonnaroo. The answer: Don't lock your tent. If someone wants to steal your shit, they're just going rip open your tent if you have a lock on it. At least your tent will still be in good condition after you get robbed if you leave it unlocked.

I agree that a lock would make any tent a more exciting target for a thief.
