Yeah, the mastering sounds kind of strange. After nearly 2 full listens, at the moment I prefer Valtari to this one by a good bit. There are some good songs (the title track is one of the best songs I've heard all year), but a lot of it sounds really same-y.

    Fun interview with Jonsi

Your bassist, Georg "Goggi" Hólmonce, said that you guys flirted with "this Smashing Pumpkins-style rock thing" in your early days together. Was there a bizarro-world version of Sigur Rós that sounded like '90s alternative rock?
Yeah, we listened to the first two Smashing Pumpkins albums a lot. We really liked them. Also Spiritualized, and the Verve, their first album, A Storm in Heaven. We really liked that sort of music. The first year of Sigur Rós, we were playing kind of slow, grand rock, or something — yeah, maybe more rock than, like, some ambient stuff. After that we slowly found our groove.

Also around this time, you said on your website, "We are simply gonna change music forever, and the way people think about music. And don't think we can't do it, we will." How do you feel about that statement now?
[Laughs] Nostalgic! You're young and full of energy and have this cockiness. I think it's beautiful. When we started traveling outside of Iceland and we started to become more known, we had to do some photo shoots and interviews. I remember we didn't like the photo shoots — we had to pose and be really cool. We always felt strongly about letting the music speak for itself, and there shouldn't be pictures of us, and stuff like that. But you know, things change, time flies, and you become a little more relaxed.

The press materials say your new album, Kveikur, is influenced by "private grief."
    Private grief?

There also some subtle dubstep influences on the new album. Do you listen to electronic music?
Yeah. When you're on tour, you listen to a lot of weird music backstage. Not weird, but we listen to a lot of Baltimore club, or trap music, and also really really dirty and gritty dubstep. We listen to pretty weird music before we go onstage and afterwards.

The new album is really abrasive. I've had one listen though, so I need to digest it more.

Singer and band leader Jónsi put out a statement today to reassure fans, adding “most of you didn’t listen to the last album anyway so it will probably feel pretty new.”

People who bought it already should get to keep both copies. That's gonna be a collector's item for sure. Jonsi's comment is hilarious, who knew he had such an awesome sense of humor?

Yes, it's from a satirical website that also has an article about James Blake releasing a clothing line of button up shirts in various shades of gray for H&M.

met him at SXSW one night, and saw him later on in the week and chatted for a little. we were standing outside a club where Just Blaze & Big Sean were performing, and he said it'd be smart to go, because Kanye is gonna pop up for a performance. paid the door guy $40, and ended up with no Kanye. no Big Sean. and Baauer. fucking Nardwuar...

    Today!

tomorrow, june 26th, sigur rós will perform a dj set (of sorts) for boilerroom.tv. the event will be broadcast live from berlin and the sigur rós portion of the evening starts at 23:00 cest (22:00 london, 17:00 nyc, 14:00 los angeles, 06:00 tokyo). here is a bit more information about the event

a word – and perhaps a warning – about sigur ros & friends ‘triple nipple’ boiler room dj set tomorrow. this is not going to be wall-to-wall, hair-tossing post-rock. there will be no glacial soundscapes of awesome dimensions. neither warm bubble baths of yoga wind-down muzak. (or any of the other enduring cliches about sigur ros). instead triple nipple represents what sigur ros do when they are off-duty – you know, for fun. some of it may be tough, cool and futuristic, some of it will no doubt be high-aroma fromage. most of the cool stuff comes courtesy of sigrun jonsdottir, the band’s trombone-wielding authority on baltimore club. guitarist kjartan holm, meanwhile, pitches in with some minimal hip-hop, orri with some dubstep and, yes, you’ve guessed it, jonsi brings the extensive cheeseboard. no-one involved lays claim to be able to mix, even remotely. this is how sigur ros get down and unwind in the dressing room and on the tour bus after a show. if you’d like a window on their world, come on in. if you are expecting a mystique enhancing exercise of deep solipsism, look away now.
