Default Give Me A Reason To Care About...

Word-of-the-mouth, critical acclaim, and perhaps the "duuuuuuuude" or "I love those guys!" that usually accompanies the announcement that you're seeing so-and-so band at a concert can get you amped up for acts you've never even seen or heard before. That being said, can you guys give me a good solid reason, or hell just a description of seeing them live or whatever, for going to see...

    Sonic Youth
    Faithless
    Manu Chao
    Air
    Tiesto
    Jarvis Cocker
    New Pornographers
    Lilly Allen
    Paul van Dyk

...This year. And thanks, if you do.

Air are pure bliss live. They do a really great, downtempo and relaxing style of electronica that is perfect as the sun sets. Everyone would enjoy their set.

Click this thread in Coachella Lounge - Let's hear some Coachella music then watch & listen to some of them over there in their glorious embedded You Tube music/live concert videos. I'll be posting Sonic Youth's over there.

Yeah, but c'mon...it's Sonic Youth. They are pretty legendary, unlike everyone else on that list. And it's not exactly hard to find information on them, either.

I mean, there's a entire frickin' documentary film about them. (Forgot the name..."Silver Rocket" maybe? It's on Sundance Channel all the time.)

Few female rappers not named Missy Elliott have made a significant impact on modern music; ditto that with foreign rap acts in a finicky U.S. market. Yet without much explanation we have a sudden harmonic convergence where Australia's Macromantics, Britain's Lady Sovereign, and M.I.A.'s second-album drama are making waves in America's pop and indie circles. Crazy women with thick accents are creating some of the world's best hip-hop right now, and their current ringleader is Lily Allen with her stellar debut Alright, Still. Allen spins first-person middle-class yarns the way The Streets' Mike Skinner used to do -- stories of avoiding bad pick-up lines ("Knock 'em Out"), cheating lovers ("Smile," "Alfie"), and self-esteem issues ("Everything's Just Wonderful"). What's really setting her apart -- and making music fans of all stripes take notice -- is her melodic delivery. Allen's arrangements take a deceptively naive and sing-song approach to lyrics with obvious rap structure, and when buoyed by backing tracks like the lilting horns of "LDN" it's a joy even to listen to her cussing. She won't be mistaken for an R&B genre-bender like Pink or Lauryn Hill, nor an urbanized singer-songwriter like Kirsty MacColl or Ani DiFranco, yet the fact that Lily Allen even comes close to these ends of the musical spectrum portends something greater: universal appeal.

Still, the kid is 17 years old and probably just getting into music and shows. You don't have to be a dick to the kid because he doesn't know information about a band and wants to learn more. At least he isn't saying, "Can someone tell me more about Fountains of Wayne?" then go right ahead and lay into him

If youre interested enough in alternative music to spend time on the coachella message board then you better know something about the sonic youth.

Go watch Arcade Fire live. Then, you will see the light.

As for New pornographers: Mass Romantic is probably my favorite album by them, but listen to "These are Fables" if you're looking for just one track. Neko Case, Dan Bejar... Just fantastic.

Air-limit yourself to Talkie Walkie first. try out "Venus" if just listening to one track. As stated above, they play a set that will perfectly complement the setting sun. And yes, bliss is a great way to put it. Air just makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Sonic Youth- Possibly one of the most under-appreciated bands of the past couple of decades. I mean, even if you are completely unfamiliar with them, buy (or download) their most recent album, "rather Ripped". Just a fantastic album. Oh yeah, in 20 years, when you have kids, you get to say you saw Sonic Youth at Coachella and earn major cool points.

Jarvis Cocker- Just buy or download "Jarvis" and listen to it two or three times, all the way through. Not really a weak link on that album.

Lily Allen- I'm right there with you. I have listened to her stuff and have not been even mildly impressed. Just not my thing.

New pornographers are utterly boring live. (seen them twice) Sonic Youth live doesnt do their recordings justice. Thurston Moore is whacked! Air is beautiful live; sprawl a blanket on the lawn and enjoy.

Just make sure you dont miss Arcade Fire- you will get exhausted from all the positive energy.

The only thing I have ever heard of Lily Allen is those wierd promos on MTV where they follow her around, and she talks about how cool she is. My favorite one is when she is walking out of Wasteland on Melrose, saying she feels so confidant about herself after buying overpriced clothes. Hmmmm...insecurity? I still want to check her out though, 'cause she is kind of hot.

About Sonic Youth, I just downloaded "Rather Ripped" so for those of you who I can imagine had their mouths gaping wide open at the fact that I had never before heard of Sonic Youth... Well, maybe next time I can join in on you guys when somebody else says they have no clue about the band, heh.

For every kid who hasn't ever heard of Sonic Youth, you are bound to find a few who know the name holds a certain prestige amongst music lovers and actually asks whether or not the hype is true. =P

I listened to some of the stuff off of "Talkie Walkie" and now I'm getting more Air, so I'm glad I went with intuition there.

From most of your gratious comments, I figure that Jarvis Cocker, New Porn, Faithless are the most worth checking out. I went to Lily Allen's myspace and, sadly, I wasn't thoroughly impressed, so there goes that. I'm slowly starting to get the Arcade Fire, but I think it'll take their live show to truly amaze me.

What I really don't get is why the Arctic Monkeys are so hyped... Then again, that might just be me.
