Reggae on the River/ Reggae on The Rocks

Curious if any of you festival junkies have been to these. One's in northern California, others in Colorado.

I've heard great things about both. My friend and I have been trying to get to Reggae on the river for 3 years but it has never panned out.

Is it true you need to buy your tickets way in advance?

I've been to reggae on the river!!! It's 'bout 4hrs north of the city up 101 it gorgeous and hot but much different now than it was years ago...the offsite camping is pretty cool cuz they have a shuttle that takes you from camp to venue, people walk around with fists full of colas and shrooms. Dont go swimming in the river after fri/sat unless its upriver from festival due to people disposing bodily waste and the shore of the river.

It's fun!!! But your poster is 2 years old and the historical promoter is not doing it anymore cause of loss of contract. Now it's a new festival called raggae rising wich is on the neighboring ranch...

the problem with reggae is that it's turned into stoner jam music only and none of the new bands are any good and one of the new songs are any good. I mean, yeah it was always stoner music, but shit, in the 60s and 70s there were a lot of good reggae songs written and recorded. I can't think of a decent one since "Redemption Song" which was, what, 1981?

back in Houston there was a reggae club in the village between Rice and West U that was pretty cool. I mean for there to even be a reggae club in Houston in the early to mid 80s was pretty amazing but it showed something about the neighborhood. They had great happy hours where you would get 3-for-1 drinks and just get wasted cheap. Eek-A-Mouse used to play there all the time, I mean he played so often that I assumed at first he was some local house act and not a bigtime Jamaican star.

on a side note...I once got into a argument with this hawaiian guy who said that Bob Marley was bigger and better then the Beatles because of his influence on Reggae...

I have been to Reggae on the River (now Reggae Rising) about 12 times. It cant be beat for the feeling of freedom at a festival. The early bird tix for this year went on sale about a month and half ago. The lineup is great. Almost a complete reunion of Black Uhuru w/ Don Carlos, Junior Reid, and Sly and Robbie. The historical promoter (Peoples Productions lead by Carol Bruno former executive director of the Mateel Community Center - she's the one that actually created the fest) is the current producer of reggae rising. The fest still uses Frenchs camp (the original site) for camping, but the festival site has been expanded to include the neighboring ranch. Last year was the first year for reggae rising, but they have been using the expanded site for 2 years now. I HIGHly suggest that you go.

I can think of 3 solid albums, from start to finish, not mention single songs.
