Why do we always hear that there has to be water on a planet for it to hold life? We're talking about aliens. Couldn't it maybe, just be possible that some crazy creature living on a distant planet hold no need for water?

Yes, that is possible. Water has some crazy properties - the density of ice being lower than that of liquid water, etc - that seem to make it very amenable to life... but, sure, there's always another way. Probably, at least.

Though that would create numerous other problems. We may not even recognize them as living beings. We may not recognize them as sentient (assuming we're talking about sentient beings.) There would be more barriers to communication. And we may not ever be able to interact with them in person due to the different and possible mutually hostile environments.

So yeah, water-based life would be a whole lot easier.

Of course, i am not talking about right now. But there is some intriguing theories on the subject. Maybe our great-great grand kids will be able to use them, or even completly disprove them. But it is a fun idea to think about.

I was actually watching an episode of The Universe a few weeks ago and there's some professor who's building a machine that he thinks will be able to send a particle back in time. It will use focused light (which if Einstein was right is the same thing as mass).

The shitty thing is that even theoretically you can't send any information back in time further than when the time travel device was created. You can only loop back to where you started looping. I was devestated to learn this because now the storyline in The Terminator just seems silly.

The only way to get further back in time than the invention of time travel is to find aliens who invented it before we did.

i agree whynotsmile, i hate it when people assume that the only possible life in the universe must be life as we know it on earth. there could be life forms that dont need air, water, energy, etc to live. sure, we might not be able to communicate, or even recognize them, but thats not really relevant to the question of whether they exist or not.
