Go ahead and order "On Avery Island" and "Live at Jittery Joe's" (the latter is Jeff Mangum solo acoustic playing NMH songs). If you just got introduced to NMH and you already like them, chances are you'll become obsessed for a short period. I can attest. I've been hooked for years. While this may come across as blasphemous in Indie circles, I think there are parts of "On Avery Island" that eclipse anything from Aeroplane. Aeroplane as a cohesive unit is by far the better of the two. The eerie Anne Frank back-story, the King of Carrot Flowers saga (when part II segues into part III, --"Up and Over we go..."--I still get goosebumps. Point is, Aeroplane is a masterpiece.
That said, "Baby for Pree" and its counterpart "Where You'll Find Me Now", and "Gardenhead/Leave me Alone" are every bit as good as anything off Aeroplane. I owned "On Avery Island" before Aeroplane, so maybe it's just my skewed bias. Also, the Live at Jittery Joe's album combines Baby for Pree/Leave Me Alone in such a great way... I'm done rambling. Why are there 20,000 BOC threads each year, and only a couple NMH threads each year? I'd think the likelihood of Mangum coming out of his semi-retirement, getting some of the old E-6 collective to back him, etc. would be about as likely as BOC playing. Though, I'll admit that NMH are NOT ideally suited for a large outdoor festival...

Yeah...if NMH were to actually reunite before the apocalypse, I think the best venue for them would be my house.
daft punk is playing at my house

This sort of statement is way overused. There's no consensus, I don't get where people get that idea. I mean, to me at least, part of the idea of "indie" - or "underground" or "alternative" or "modern" "avant-guarde" or whatever the current term is - is the very notion that there is and furhter more should be no consensus. It's good, it's important for people to like different things. It's better for the listener/consumer... it's just not good for those with a big slice of the business that want to keep it that way with minimal effort.
Case in point: I completely agree here. "Song Against Sex," "Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone" and "Naomi" are NMH's three best songs but yes, Aeroplane is the better album.
I doubt he would do it without the real band. I see no reason to throw together new folks even if they are old friends too. Also there are more Boards of Canada threads because they're an active band and occasionally play shows. BoC showing up is way more likely. I'm not expecting it. And I would be way more excited about NMH.
- No band is "ideally suited" to a large outdoor festival
- Seriously, who wouldn't rather see... Radiohead, RATM, Bjork etc in a small club?
- That goes more than double for the less well known bands that play clubs
- Maybe the EDM artists. Maybe.
- I mean I liked seeing Daft Punk with a crowd for the dancing but a smaller venue would still have been better.
- It's just that the ideal would be larger than for the more rock or hip hop bands.
- Also while yes, NMH in a tiny venue would be the bestest they would rock the shit out of a huge festival .
- Have you seen video of them (full band) playing?
- After I saw the old videos I understood why some folks thought to compare Arcade Fire to NMH.
Mccabe, that was the best post I've ever read. Just one notch above my post that you were referencing.
