    Question Prince: Set lists/recommendations

At the risk of getting flamed for adding yet another Prince thread, I'd like the Princexperts to offer up some info:

    1. What have his setlists looked like over the past few years;
    2. What post-Purple Rain material can you recommend that he might actually play?

    Thx much!

this is going to be the 11th time i've seen prince. i can tell you (and this is my totally biased opinion) that ANYTHING he's going to play is going to be amazing.

but to throw in my 2 cents on this subject, i would imagine that he'll do some of his older material medley style like he did on the musicology tour. and more stuff of the past couple of albums (musicology, 3121, planet earth).

...then again, this is prince and you never know.

We saw him in 2004 - he played a "medley" of his 80's hits - combined in about 30 min. Then it was like 2 hours straight of jazz stuff and other solo music from his band ... and then he ended with the full Purple Rain.

So I really can't say what to expect. He was shaking that ass on that stage from start to finish though...

I've seen him a few times and every time has been different.

The last show I saw was last year in Vegas. He did a couple 'hits' (including Purple Rain and Boys & Girls), did some jazz and Dixie (yes, Dixie), brought Sheila E out for some of her old songs, did a cover of Crazy, made the audience sing Kiss for him, danced with Morris Day.

Basically, whatever the f*k he wants to do at that moment, he's going to do.

    And you'll LOVE IT.

I think he should keep it 80s and slightly really early 90s cos everything else I ain't got into yet.

basically, greatest hits, then do a cover of Sum 41s In Too Deep

oh and I remember reading somewhere that his show in Ireland is his last greatest hits tour or something. I'm sure its not the end, but i remember reading about greatest hits. I really doubt he would do 2 hours of jazz mingling headlining Coachella.

BUt guest stars, now that I can see. Sly Stone? Stevie Wonder. Morris Day and the fucking time?!

I highly doubt he'll play that much material at 'chella, but it will give everyone an idea of what he was playing just 7-8 months ago. Most headliners only get 1.5 hours or less at festies, cause of the amount of bands playing. That set list is close to a 2.5 hour show...

MORRIS DAY added as Sunday headliner!
Coachella is a place beyond conventional geography, a time not measured in hours or minutes, an experience, a state of mind, an attitude, and a holy form of expression. The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival is an annual festival put on by Goldenvoice in Indio, CA. Please don't confuse the two.

I guess Prince had a party as his house last weekend, and here's the report. Seems like he is very motivated to have a big summer. I would not be surprised to see a few special guests with him. I forgot about the Chili Pepper guys, but Stevie Wonder, Dave Grohl??

    "PRINCE throws star-studded funk session.

Thanks to an eye-witness who sent in this report:

LAWD, check this out: Last night (April 06) the funky one threw a house party/concert for 75-100 friends and celebs.. we were too busy having fun to notice who all was there, but we did see Salma Hayek and Larry Graham (Graham Central Station/Sly & the Family Stone).

The party started jumping around 1 am when Prince and a light ‘n tight version of his band kicked things off with a bang. Some of the songs were Alphabet St., Girls and Boys, a load of Sly and the Family Stone songs (including Stand, which we’ve never heard from this band before), and a few more surprises. Prince spent equal time tearing it up on guitar and keys, sometimes even playing both during the same song. Prince hasn’t gotten much credit for his keyboard playing but he can rip it up with the best of ‘em. Some of the piano jams played last night: Superstition, Higher Ground, Tell Me Something Good. Larry G funked it up on bass during many of the Sly numbers, and also some of the Stevie Wonder jams.

Among the surprises: after Stand, Prince and the band broke into what seemed to be a brand new song that would do James Brown proud, with Prince laying down some serious rhythm chops on guitar. We hope he releases this one! It’s all that and a bag of drumsticks.

Another surprise: Shelby J. (vocalist) tore up a rocked out version of India Arie’s Brown Skin; another jam the band seems to have learned overnight. It seems like they’re warming up to hit our ears HARD with some serious funk.
    "
A party like this is the ultimate way to see a Prince show — no barriers, no distance between guest and performers — all fun, like those chilled out house party jams that musicians of all calibers whip up when they want to throw down some grooves and kick it with their friends.

Ok so back to recommendations. I love Jazz and Funk, but I hate the song Purple Rain...what might I like of his? Anyone?
Superfan will be in front of the Fonda masturbating furiously to a photo of him taking a photo of a band. Set is from 8:05 to approximately 8:05:15. Guest list only.

Upcoming Shows: Marques Wyatt - UCLA, Paul Mccartney - Dodger Stadium, Yes - Greek Theater, Herbie Hancock - Hollywood Bowl, NIN/Soundgarden - Hollywood Bowl, Cut Chemist/Dj Shadow - Palladium, Massive Attack SB Bowl
