Default I'm going to Austin, what should I check out?

So tomorrow night I'm flying out to Austin, TX to scope out the place. I need to get out of this icebox since nothing is happening up here and so far the #1 suggested place for me to go is Austin, so I'm heading down there to check it out and see a few concerts too.

So for those of you who are familiar with the place, what stuff should I see? Keep in mind that I don't know jack shit about the place and will be basically wandering around aimlessly just enjoying myself.

Everything! The downtown area is amazing! The people are really nice there too when I visited last year.

I'm thinking of moving to Austin myself. Won't happen for a few months since my lease isn't up till the end of August, but if any Austin peeps have recommendations on where to look for housing and jobs, it'd be much appreciated.

Tour the Statehouse. It's pretty cool. Also check out Ironworks bbq, Rudys bbq, The Salt lick (bit out of town though) and Stubbs.

4th Street & 6th Street are where the nightlife is at.

Yeah, I might go to Stubbs on Friday night, Ra Ra Riot are playing but that's a big maybe. The Mars Volta is the only must-go for me.

Be sure to say hello to my White Trash relatives...you can find them getting drunk, tweaking, and getting arrested. No joke.

say hello to my in-laws. My f-i-l will be talking nonstop about nothing, with the TV on too loud at the same time. My m-i-l will be quilting.

6th street is kinda frat boy central, I find it dull. 4th street has better restaurants and bars. I like the Gingerman myself. great juke box and a gazillion beers on tap. pool tables.

if you have a car go out to the Oasis in the late afternoon and have a few cocktails and watch the people applaud the sunset. it's worth doing once.

    waterloo records is great.

I like the continental club too.

    I second this.

Also, go to Rudy's and eat brisket, and wander around downtown and catch some shows.

    Spend your days here:

your early evenings on S. Congress watching the bats...

    or...

    The sunset at The Oasis

and your nights on Sixth st./Red river & 4th/Colorado

You have to make the 20 minute trip to eat here:

It's byob, so be sure to make friends with the softball team (there will be one) so you can have some of their keg.

and tour some of the 30 wineries in the area

Hamilton Pool Preserve is a natural pool that was created when the dome of an underground river collapsed due to massive erosion thousands of years ago. The pool is located about 23 miles (37 km) west of Austin, Texas off Highway 71 and supports recreational opportunities such as picnicking, hiking, swimming and nature study. One of the most outstanding features of the pool is its 45 foot (14 m) waterfall that spills from the dome above. The preserve is home to some small fish and turtles, which are protected by strict regulation.
