Default Hey, Hannahrain / all Oregonians

Oregon is one of only two states with no sales tax, right? So does that mean it's cheaper to buy stuff in Oregon than in the states that DO have sales tax? Like, if I wanted to come to the States and buy a digital camera, should I wait till I get to Oregon to do it, and save some money, or would it be exactly the same price in LA?

I figured there might be at least two. Guess not.

I used to live in Oregon, and yes, it's way cheaper to buy stuff there. Especially big purchases like TVs and cameras! I live in Seattle now and sales tax is 9%...it's KILLING ME!

Where do bad folks go when they die? They don't go to heaven where the angels fly. They go to a lake of fire and fry.

You'd save some. They don't inflate the price to cover it, because the money wouldn't have gone to the store in the first place. They don't lose anything. You're not going to save a colossal amount, though, so you have to decide if it's really worth it to you to not have a camera until you get here just to save fifteen, twenty bucks.

You'll definitely feel the lack of sales tax in the potholes you'll encounter.

You save some money. Not enough to freak out about though.

Too bad seattle sales tax goes to things like sports stadiums...

Whats up with Oregonians addiction to Keno? Every bar and diner has a tv running keno games.

Oregon lotto lets you place sports bets. I am a fan of that.

wmgaret, yes, I know. It hurts. It's actually 9.5% sales tax on any food and beverage. It's 9.0% sales tax, and then they tack on an extra .5% like you said, which goes to the stadium that I don't even go to!

Guess who's moving back to Oregon?!

I was born in Bend. Maybe one day I'll go back. You use not to be able to pump your own gas in Oregon. Not sure if it's still like that. But Oregon has some good stuff. Crater Lake, the coast line, some cool/artsy towns. Good times.

We couldn't pump a few years ago. The guy yelled at us for trying.

Shit, I forgot about that. Going on a road trip this summer, about half is in Oregon. That's going to drive me insane.

You still can't pump your own gas. It makes people from here really afraid to get gas in other states because they've never pumped their own.

Portland is one of my most anticipated stops on our upcoming road trip. The only thing I can find to do, however, is visit a handful of breweries and Irish Pubs (Kells downtown, to start).

What else can we do here (in Portland)?
[Edit: to clarify, it'll be two Canadian guys]

That's not so bad. Where I live, they tack on TWO percent for restaurants and hotels. Plus our base tax rate is all screwed up, because a few years ago, they had a half percent increase for a bunch of specific projects. But they put it on the ballot as different initiatives. People voted for all but one, so our tax rate is 8.326 or some weird number like that.

She's saying that, while it's nice they don't collect sales tax, they also don't take care of the roads properly or build parks and other public facilities. (Playground is like a park for kids.)

Visit even more breweries. Make sure you go to the Kennedy School- an old elementary school turned into a hotel with bars, restaurants, movie theatre, pool...it's nutty.

Because the local governments and cities don't get extra money from taxes to spend on public improvements. That's why they resort to weird and strange things like having Halfway get sponsored/paid to change it's official name to "Half.com" (though it's changed back to Halfway).
