I've had this idea before as well. I would love it as I'm a big Soundgarden fan but I can understand if others wouldent be all that excited. How about Prince Friday- Soundgarden Saturday, and whatever Electro band you people want Sunday night to close it out. I see a calm 2009 coachella board.

A calm board filled with I HATE SOUNDGARDEN, CHRIS CORNELL = SUCK, PRINCE>SOUNDGARDEN.

    It's the 10th anniversary. They won't waste a milestone.

Soundgarden reuniting wouldn't be a good 10th anniversary present? On Friday at least? Saturday and Sunday you might expect more but if Soundgarden reuniting is the worst headliner you have little to complain about.

Not only do they sound NOTHING like Nirvana, but Soundgarden's first full length album Ultramega OK was released in 1988, a year before Nirvana's Bleach.

    Just sayin'.

Yeah, you're right, they're just a Nirvana ripoff.
I knew someone was gonna chime in like that. Nirvana ran circles around Soundgarden. Sorry, but it's true. Song writing wise, melody wise, 100x better, no if's and's or but's. But wait, because I like Nirvana, it means I must be excited for some type of 'grunge' reunion right? Sorry again. I don't even consider Nirvana to be "grunge". It's because of bands like Soundgarden and AIC that give "grunge" a bad name.

Nirvana was better than Soundgarden. Soundgarden was still good. Nirvana is dead, Soundgarden is still a possibility.

Nirvana is the reason the genre "grunge" exists, so if anyone is, Nirvana is. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden give grunge a bad name how? Guitarists too talented?

It's not that you have to like Soundgarden, but every time a topic comes up about any other grunge band besides Nirvana (e.g. STP), I always see you post some sarcastic post against that band. I get the sense that your're some kind of Nirvana fanatic who is offended by anything that sounds remotely like them, as if all other grunge is a personal attack against Kurt Cobain.

I could be wrong, just let me know.

edit: If you don't consider Nirvana grunge, it's kind of strange that a) your avatar says "grunge is dead" and b) you complain that two other grunge bands give grunge a bad name.

Sorry, but I don't buy the idea that Nirvana is the reason that grunge "exists". What is grunge? Heavy droned out guitar sounds, need to clear your throat vocals? None of that existed prior to 1989's Bleach? I don't think so. Nirvana didn't invent the "grunge" genre. Sure though, I will say that Nirvana popularized the grunge genre, there's no question about that, but I think that's only because at the time Nirvana started to get big, many other bands from Seattle started to spring up, and all the critics alike all threw them into the same pile and labeled them all as grunge. But maybe it's just me, but I hear a huge difference between Nirvana and bands like Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Tad and others. All those latter bands I mentioned cherish in the idea of heavy guitar sounds and yelling vocals. But Nirvana? I would consider them way way way lighter, and far more poppier than any of those bands. Much more along the lines of Sonic Youth, Vaselines, Pixies and such. Sure they got some heavy sounding "grunge" songs, but on a whole, I don't see it.

And to respond to your "guitarist too talented" remark...I could care less how much talent someone has on a guitar. I'm not impressed by solos or "licks" at all. I don't care if someone could play some hot tune blindfolded and behind their back, if I don't like the song, lyrics, melody or whatever, I'm not gonna like you. I know Cobain wasn't the greatest on guitar, but does that matter? I don't think so.

I'm not offended, but I know just because I have a Nirvana related avatar, it's automatically assumed I love all types of grunge music, which is just funny. I could say more, but I don't wanna offend/upset people over their favorite bands. If you like soundgarden, then more power to you. I hope they reunite and you get to see them and enjoy it.

And the "grunge is dead" is like a joke.

Soundgarden came first and was great, whereas Nirvana was transcendent.

I saw Soundgarden twice in '96 and Chris Cornell solo this past July, all three times from 5-10ft away.

I never did get the chance to see Nirvana and they are one of the few bands I truly regret not seeing live.

Soundgarden is probably not going to get back together, maybe Chris (age 44) and Kim (age 48) will, but I wouldn't bet on it (I sure would go to the show though).

menik, i kind of get that feeling too, like you are so obsessed with nirvana that you're insulted by any band being compared to them, no matter what type of comparison it is.

i never really thought of it as an actual style of music, but more like just that scene. all those bands coming out of seattle during the 90's = grunge. doesnt matter what they sounded like, as long as they were from the northwest, wore flannels, and didnt shower.

Before exploitation, the Seattle 'scene' was like 2 bars and a few people's basements.

I agree. I was just trying to figure out why Alice in Chains and Soundgarden "gave grunge a bad name". Your reason as I understand it, is because they yell too much and are loud? I'm not convinced, considering you're a Nirvana fan. Kurt would yell to the point of incoherence (see Weird Al's "Smells Like Nirvana) and they were very loud (quiet/loud/quiet/loud/repeat).

I'm not offended, but I know just because I have a Nirvana related avatar, it's automatically assumed I love all types of grunge music, which is just funny.
Well really, it's the "grunge is dead" part that makes one assume you're a grunge fan.
