depends on the economy of the us as a whole....I think the festival market is reaching a frothy stage now and alot of them will fail regardless of their line ups...in the end it will only be Coachella and Bonnaroo. at least 5 more years....but I hope it becomes our Glastonbury and stays on forever....

Eventually they will definitely die. Some of them. Depends on the backers too. How much money the promoter can lose

I certainly hope it sticks around.
I also hope the current abundance of other festivals die out.

I have a feeling a lot of these will fail...and not fail in the sense that no one goes but in the sense that people lose money even with 30,000 people in attendance per day....running this things are impossible if you don't know what the hell you are doing...

it may come to a end in 2-3years cos the company that owns the land want's to develop on it. If they did that the polo field would still be there but no parking lots etc.

They've been wanting to develop it for years.
With todays economy, I doubt anyone is making any kind of sales at Empire or El Dorado.
Even if it was to sell, there are still plenty of places here locally to hold an event like Coachella.
For what GV pays to rent the current property , they could go to the east side of I-10 and buy land.
There's already water service there and as remote as some of the areas are, there would be no noise issues there.
I know the land is cheap due to the fact that there are numerous fault zones in the area.
I worked the area for some geologists last year so I already know what their reports say even though these reports have yet to be made public.
There were 3500 homes scheduled to be built on this property but it's unlikely that it will go through.
You cant get a permit to build any kind of permanent structure within 300' of an active fault.
There are a few fault zones that run in the area.
But what you could do is set up stages, tents and anything else thats needed.
The elevation of the area gives you a view of the entire valley.
It wouldn't take much to make parking and camping areas.
I think Coachella will be here for quite some time.

Not doubting you at all... I'm in the business myself. I know the valley market. The market will decide. But it's fair to say that if there's a decline in RE then the festival may last longer... but once it's on again it it would be fair to say come to the open house models!!

Word on the street is 2 more years.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

Damn, beat me to it. Coachella 2012 will be epic! Radiohead will be doing OK Computer in it's entirety with guests from Pulp, Blur, Underworld, and The Smiths backing them up on kazoos. The polo fields will also be ground zero for Planet X to strike the Earth. Good times for all!

I camped in 2002, and hoteled it ever since. This year got a house 2 miles from the event. Seems each year we get the process down a little more and a little more

I think some sort of disaster at some other festival will kill it.

Like 2 or 3 people will die at Rothbury, or there'll be some mass medical emergency at outside lands, or some riot will break out at some other no-name festival that pops up. Or you might get a Field Day 2, where an entire fest gets essentially cancelled a few days before it's supposed to go off.

Suddenly insurance rates for the festival go way, WAY up, local municipalities get skittish, investors, sponsors, and bands get hesitant, and suddenly some crappy festival has ruined it for everyone.

I'd like to think Coachella will be here forever, but you should still treat each of them like it could be the last.

Its like the Infinite Monkey Theorem, if you put X amount of monkeys in a room with a typewriter and ask them to give you Shakespeare 99% of them will fling their shit at you while the other 1% will masturbate in the corner.

I have a feeling coachella will last.

Festivals like Coachella feature artists that are not on top 40 (or on the rare occasion they become top 40) and if that can sell out a field, or if even this year without the big shockingly awesome headliner (well in a lot of peoples eyes) and it is still doing well, says something. As long as the caliber of artists stays the same it should do fine in my book.

Also i feel like the way the market is going concert wise, festivals like this will be the norm and I dont know, I would think some bands would like the guaranteed draw that even the first band gets, more than someone buying your cd and actually having the initiative to go buy tickets; they get people who are there and whom are ready to be won over. It seems like a win for them and no bruised egos with only 50 tickets sold.

Since the show list is very minimal...
    August 29 // Chemical Brothers w/ Chromeo & Yacht @ Hollywood Bowl
September 26 // Vampire Weekend w/ Beach House & the Very Best @ Hollywood Bowl
October 5 // ARCADE FIRE @ Henry Miller Library
October 13 // Corin Tucker Band @ The El Rey
(someone should give me Sufjan Stevens tickets, aint got none of those)

I have been hearing the same rumors since 2000, about Coachella not being around soon. Yet, thats the point, they are just rumors. I doubt the Polo Field will turn into a piece of land where Lofts or homes will be built. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival brings in too much revenue in Indio/Coachella, for a sleepy desert town to turn that spot into a gated community with model homes. At any rate it will be a long time before Coachella goes out of style I believe.
I wonder if next year will be uber-sick because it will be the 10th year anniversary?
