Antarctic Ice Breaks from Shelf

A chunk of Antarctic ice about seven times the size of Manhattan suddenly broke off from an ice shelf, putting an even greater portion of glacial ice at risk.

ASU Climatoligist Randy Cerveny says it's an unusual but not heard of event.

"These usually break off in large chunks, just about five or six years ago we had a chunk that was the size of Delaware that broke off," Cerveny said. "They do on occasion break off in a large, big chunk."

A British scientist called the event, the result of global warming.

Cerveny says that assertion is premature.

"A lot of people would say oh well since we see this large chunk falling off that all of Antarctica must be melting," Cerveney said. "No, actually a large portion of Antarctica is actually getting colder. So to try to draw too many implications from the fact of one large chunk of ice breaking off from Antarctica, probably a little to early to do."

The chunk may have been there for 1,500 years before breaking-away. It was the leading edge of the even larger Wilkins Ice Shelf in Western Antarctica - about the size of Connecticut.

We have to worry more about Ocean Acidification.

Its the process of the world's oceans becoming saturated with CO2, which increases the PH balance of the water. This increase in acidification has harmful effects on the phytoplankton that produce the MAJORITY of the world's oxygen supply and serve as the foundation of the ocean's food chain. Their shells literally melt, which leaves the fishes high 'n dry and us without oxygen.
